Trump announced in a single statement that (i) he was doubling canadian tariffs on steel to 50%, and (ii) would annex canada.

WIthin hours, certain tariffs that had been instituted by canada were dropped.  So trump dropped the 50% down to the originally planned 25%.

Trump was extremely serious about the 50% tariff (hence the immediate backing down by Canada), and the annex threat was in the same very short statement. WHich makes it seem likely that he is also very serious about annexing canada if he doesn't continue to get what he wants.  We are no longer in joke territories.  Large canadian businesses are taking asset protection strategies against US expropriation.  I know because i am seeing email traffic at work about this.  People think this is not a joke and are changing business practices to protect against annexation.  [/quote]
