| I'm on Tiktok where there are always videos from angry Canadians ranting about the tarriffs, how theyve cancelled their vacation and are only buying Canadian, etc. Which... totally fine and understandable. But what's crazy to me is this very xenophobic anger towards random American people, just spewing utterly hateful stuff. I'm not sure what the end goal is here, maybe it's just a form of venting and they dont mean it but frankly it comes off deranged. I dont think the average American feels the same kind of deep seated animosity towards Canadians (or any particular country, for that matter). Has anyone seen this? |
| Who cares? They live in the cold. |
| Must not read too much news while you're on Tiktok |
| Why is it surprising? Do you know any country that loves Americans? Serious question. |
Yes! I actually live abroad (Europe) and it's quite common for me to hear from people how much they love America when I say where I'm from. Of course I also get a good bit of ranting about Trump, people who sometimes dont like America, whatever. I think a bit of polarization is to be expected, but for sure you get plenty of really positive remarks when you say youre American. And I spent a good amount of time in various Eastern Asian countries- it's extremely common there to hear rhapsodizing praise about Americans. But I mean, some haters are to be expected. It just seems like the Canadians are on another level and are just frothing at the mouth. I find it strange. |
I'm sorry, are you saying that there aren't American spewing hate towards the people from the country South of their border? That this is a uniquely Canadian problem? 77 million Americans voted for the party that supported putting their children in cages. That seems worse than saying mean things on TikTok. |
Familiarity breeds contempt.
|
| We are the most hated country right now. Thanks Donald. |
|
The entire developed world has always "hated" americans in the big picture sense. Like, they're rude, and loud and garish, etc etc. That's been the case for 50+ years. Yes, of course, when people meet individual americans in real life, they like them as individuals. But that's different than hating them as a monolith country.
THis is not new. And what happened yesterday in the news is HORRIFYING. You should not be surprised that Canadians hate americans with a firy passionate rage. |
You can’t be serious. |
|
Wait, you are extrapolating from behavior you see on TikTok? Really?
I don’t really blame them at the moment. |
| The US government is regularly threatening Canada’s sovereignty and attempting to destabilize the country. Canada has been our faithful ally, and it’s entirely understandable that Canadians are very angry. I deal with Canadians every day, if you voted for this, most of them despise you. If you didn’t they have sympathy and concern for you. I have yet to encounter any personal animosity. Quite the opposite. |
+1000 It's a very natural reaction to what is going on in our country right now. |
It’s terrifying! I wouldn’t travel to Canada right now. It is not safe. |
|
OP you're acting extremely nonchalant about what is happening to canada right now.
I know for a fact that Canadian companies with fixed assets in the United States are actively seeking protections to prevent EXPROPRIATION of their assets. I think there is a non-zero chance that the US also attempts to seize natural resource assets within Canada, as in start a physical land war. This is absolute insanity. Canadians have a very reasonable right to despise every American right now. This isn't like "oh we feel bad because 2% of federal workers are losing their jobs". This is the first and most outward step in an entire destabilization in the Post WWII global order. And US citizens are just shrugging and think it's trump-being-trump on twitter. |
