Canadians hating Americans?

Yes, of course, when people meet individual americans in real life, they like them as individuals. But that's different than hating them as a monolith country.

THis is not new. And what happened yesterday in the news is HORRIFYING. You should not be surprised that Canadians hate americans with a firy passionate rage.

You'll need to be a lot more specific, sadly.

TikTok is Chinese propaganda.

But what's crazy to me is this very xenophobic anger towards random American people, just spewing utterly hateful stuff. I'm not sure what the end goal is here, maybe it's just a form of venting and they dont mean it but frankly it comes off deranged. I dont think the average American feels the same kind of deep seated animosity towards Canadians (or any particular country, for that matter). Has anyone seen this?

It’s terrifying! I wouldn’t travel to Canada right now. It is not safe.

What are they going to do? Cover you in maple syrup? Make you eat fattening poutine?

My husband's grandparents are Canadian, especially from up north where he's from tons of people are. I think Trump trying to take mitary action against Canada would spark a civil war in the US.

I know for a fact that Canadian companies with fixed assets in the United States are actively seeking protections to prevent EXPROPRIATION of their assets. I think there is a non-zero chance that the US also attempts to seize natural resource assets within Canada, as in start a physical land war. This is absolute insanity.

Canadians have a very reasonable right to despise every American right now. This isn't like "oh we feel bad because 2% of federal workers are losing their jobs". This is the first and most outward step in an entire destabilization in the Post WWII global order. And US citizens are just shrugging and think it's trump-being-trump on twitter.

I just dont agree with that. I can take issue with Putin's actions and think he's the scum of the earth... that doesnt prevent me from going to the amazing Russian restaurant in my city, chatting with the sweet Russian owner, and consuming tons of vareniki. It's deranged to hate the citizens of a country because of the actions of the government and that includes hating Americans, Russians, Chinese, whatever other place...

Goodness. This is a stupid analogy. Is that Russian restaurant located in the USA operates by Americans who happen to be of Russian ancestry. Totally not the same thing. Hint. The restaurant is an American owned restaurant, employing Americans and paying American taxes. The food just happens to be Russian inspired food.

No it's not.

We don't hate Americans.

It is safe to visit Canada.

Our habitual muttering about the weather has switched course to ranting about Trump is all.

This is nothing new. It is just going more public now about their feelings towards the 'people from the states' as that is what they call Americans.

This whole website is constantly ranting about random Americans, why shouldn't Canadian tiktokers get in on it?

I am living in another country (not Canada) for my job, and I work directly with about ten Canadian colleagues. Every day it seems there is some new, crazy development in the Trump Show's treatment of Canada, and a few of my Canadians do talk about it regularly. Nobody has shown prejudice or anger to me personally, though the Canadians are angry and incredulous at what is happening.

We did start a political cartoon collage wall in the shared kitchen at work, where people have been printing satirical cartoons of Trump from news sources and adding them each morning to the collage. It now covers the entire wall.

My British colleagues are more direct in expressing their disgust at the US government, and they also tend to make disparaging comments about American people specifically, not just our politicians. However, in my many years overseas, the Brits everywhere I meet them have always been like this, so I don't think it is related to current events.

Bizarrely, I have some Chinese colleagues who LOVE LOVE LOVE Trump.

Americans and Trump are very popular in various Asian countries. When I was in Japan there were a number of places that would be absolutely decked out in American flags and very "middle America" style decorations. Stuff that would be considered OTT in the US

Are you referring to people or to gimmick restaurants, like we have Benihana and Rainforest Cafe?

Chinese striver culture idolizes greed and glitz and fakery. This is the country that invented selling iPhone shells without iPhone guts, not as a fraud, but as a way to appear rich to your peers.

It's very new. Trump declared war on Canada and denied Canadian sovereignty.

So now we're justifying xenophobia against the Chinese as well as Americans? Great. Just great.
