UVa, William and Mary, Virginia Tech should be shut down and split up or expanded

I just wish these state schools were more affordable for parents not making DCUM levels of money. In state VA schools for 2 kids can be upwards of 360k. It’s craziness.

Both UVA and W&M meet 100% of needs in state

There is a big gap between DCUM levels of money and however little a family makes to qualify for assistance.

Usually it's as much as 120-130K where a student starts to qualify for aid at the two. Not sure I'd describe that as "little", and I'm not convinced families making more are in need of a slice of the institutional grant pie.

GMU previously was part of UVA. UVA Wise still exists - a bit surprising OP's DC did not apply there. UMW was originally the women's college counterpart to UVA (which was almost only men until around 1970).

I have been told that both Radford and JMU were founded as Teachers Colleges way back when.

UVA must re-absorb GMU and UMW. There must be free transferring between these campuses. W&M must re-absorb ODU and CNU. There must also be free transferring between these. This has to happen.

Or what? You are going to stamp your little feet because your CNU kid deserves to be on WM’s campus? Spoiler alert. If UMW kid “deserved to be at UVA, they would have been admitted to UVA.

There is too much hierarchy. Alternatively, they could combine all of the universities (UVa, VTech, William and Mary, Gmu, Jmu, Cnu, Longwood) into one university and have a lottery for all who are accepted to decide who goes to which campus.

Maybe make it more like NC. UVA separate but then Virginia U - GMU campus, VAU - Longwood campus etc.

all of the public universities in NC are in the UNC system even if they aren’t named as such and many have minimal name recognition or high status. Most people outside of NC have never heard of UNC Pembroke or Elizabeth City State. Everyone in Texas does get to go to UT Austin, everyone In Florida doesn’t get to go to UF or FSU, and everyone in Georgia doesn’t get to go to UGA, it is what it is. Changing the way the Virginia universities are organized would just end up being a super expensive Reorganization and renaming that would probably end up costing millions for no reason.

Our hhi is approx $120k and my son was offered a $5k grant at W&M, the most expensive public school in the country. He literally could have gone to any other state school for cheaper, with zero financial aid. Yes, those schools meet financial need, but you need to be practically destitute for that to equal free tuition.

+1. I grew up in in NC. Some are called UNC at …. But you go to the one you are accepted at. If you are accepted at UNC-Greensboro, Charlotte or Asheville, that’s where you go and that’s what your diploma says. You don’t anttend UNCG annd get a diploma that says “UNC” and get to put it on your resume and pretend you attended Chapel Hill. And some schools are East Carolina, Western Carolina, App State, etc. but there is zero practical difference between them and UNC— not Chapel Hill. It wouldn’t even be a reorganizing to be like UNC. Just renaming to UVA-Fairfax, etc. and the diploma would say Fairfax. You couldn’t pass it off as having attend the Charlottesville campus. Really, you have a solution in search of a problem here.

Pretty sure this is the same OP from another thread insisting rejected DC “belongs” at UVA, W&M, or VT with a 4.2 and 1290 SAT and won’t accept any unworthy schools. Insane, dumb, or a troll. Or maybe all three.

Anonymous wrote:DC applied to all three of these schools last cycle and will be trying again. These three schools are getting more competitive and out of reach for everyday people. I think each of them should be split up into multiple different schools that each have less competitive admissions or they should each double in size. Not just a 10% increase or 2% increase every year or whatever thing like that. They need to start construction NOW to build at least 2x the housing, classrooms, etc. to accommodate double the number of students and all new students should be required to come from Virginia. These admissions practices have gone way too far. As soon as admission rates hit below 50% for in-state applicants there should be mandatory student body expansions

Are you the poster from the other thread that thinks their kid that has a 1290 SAT should have been admitted to W&M or UVA? This score shows that the 4.2 GPA is vastly inflated, OP.

Just untrue

The population cliff will solve this in a few years.

What do you mean your child applied last cycle? You mean last year?

I do wonder about admissions at Uva or VTech though even with 1400+SAT, 4.0+ weighted Gpa, rigor in courses, there is still SO much competition to get into these 2.
It is luck that would get kids in.

You don’t seem to understand OP. They seem to think they are entitled to a certain level of prestige.

I'm actually flabbergasted that the OP - or anybody - could be that delusional.

Their child has a 4.0! They deserve to get in!

Someone with a 4.0 deserves to get into all three. DC didn't even get into VTech. Waitlisted. Ridiculous and absurd.

Good grief. Do you have any idea how many 4.0+ students your kid was competing with?
