UVa, William and Mary, Virginia Tech should be shut down and split up or expanded

GMU previously was part of UVA. UVA Wise still exists - a bit surprising OP's DC did not apply there. UMW was originally the women's college counterpart to UVA (which was almost only men until around 1970).

I have been told that both Radford and JMU were founded as Teachers Colleges way back when.

UVA must re-absorb GMU and UMW. There must be free transferring between these campuses. W&M must re-absorb ODU and CNU. There must also be free transferring between these. This has to happen.

This is so entertaining.

I get UVA and W&M being considered tops - but Tech to me is way closer to JMU, GMU and VCU in reputation - and all of these are great choices for kids that can’t get into the first two. They are all great schools.

OP is an idiot. If you want to go to non-competitive schools, there are many in VA. So what's your point?

Have you been paying attention at all in the past few years? VT is absolutely one of the top VA schools. Good luck trying to get in there.

You can argue how much BS is in the current "holistic" admission process though (think Harvard). I think it's fair to ask for merit based admissions.

Maybe just maybe, being the smartest on paper doesn't necessarily mean a student would be the best fit for a school

Virginia has a quality school for every instate student. Just because someone doesn't get into UVA, VT & W&M doesn't mean the system is broken. As far as having a 4.0, most kids do today because of grade inflation.

GMU, JMU and VCU are all good schools as are the rest of the state schools, VA is definitely in the top 3 states with respect to public education beyond high school.

Also plenty of good out of state schools looking for 4.0 students and offering significant tuition discounts to make costs competitive. OP better for your DC to go somewhere were they are competitive from an academic standpoint and more importantly wanted.

Maybe Virginia need to shrink the out of state student body to make more spots for taxpayer in state kids.

When the enrollment cliff hits in a couple years VA universities will become less competitive. Mandatory decreases of OOSS at the apex of competitiveness is shortsighted and would likely result in VA universities not keeping up with other states' after the cliff hits.

I don’t think the 2009 ish birth year size difference is that significant.

There is a big difference in size between the ‘06-‘07 and ‘09-‘10 cohorts. The recession hit in ‘08 and the birth rate plummeted. We are at peak students graduating high school this year.

The only thing I agree with here is that public state schools should be 51% in-state students. But are they not already? What are the splits?

UVA, W&M and VT are about 2/3 in state.

That’s what UVA at Wise is for.

What exactly do you think the difference is between merit-based and holistic admissions? Do you think those things are mutually exclusive?

You get rid of OOS students, in state tuition goes up. VA gives only a small percentage of support to its colleges.

It’s 2024. You are so wrong. Kids with 4.0s get rejected these days.
