???????????????????????

You didn't use enough question marks.

The insinuation in this statement is that those offered admission are undeserving. What is “merit?” It’s like you think admission to your preferred school is a reward for academic achievement.

I think each of them should be split up into multiple different schools that each have less competitive admissions or they should each double in size. Not just a 10% increase or 2% increase every year or whatever thing like that. They need to start construction NOW to build at least 2x the housing, classrooms, etc. to accommodate double the number of students and all new students should be required to come from Virginia. These admissions practices have gone way too far. As soon as admission rates hit below 50% for in-state applicants there should be mandatory student body expansions

The UVA in state admissions rate is 25%
The W&M in state admissions rate is 44%
The Virginia Tech in state admissions rate is 57%

It's not the colleges being too exclusive.
Have you considered whether your child doesn't actually deserve a spot at these schools?

I disagree with the OP but your stats don't tell the full story. If you are from certain public HS in Virginia the acceptance rate is much lower and, more to the point, a students' stats have to be far above UVA's averages to even have a chance. The bitterest among us are the parents of very good but not tippety top students. Or maybe even tippety top applying to a very competitive major. There is a lot of competition and they won't make the cut for the top three but feel like the next tiers are "saftey schools." I think other than parents of this small group, everyone else is thrilled.

What evidence do you have to support this? Are you one of these conspiracy theorists who think they have quotas or caps?

I don't know about the others but I have seen in our HS Naviance that UVA admits about 50 students every year regardless of the number of applicants. So, no matter what they say, yes, they seem to have a quota. Which is fine IMO. 50 from one HS seems reasonable, they need to admit students from the whole state.

US News for one. That's the ranking now. They're not great with technology compared to UVA and VT and that is going to hurt them going forward.

W&M is also renovating the whole campus and expanding because it grew some 500 students over the past few years. What do you mean slipping?

Yeah I think it's had one of the greatest percentage growths of all the publics since 2020. Now at over 7k undergraduates, and 10k total population. It will also be becoming R1 next fall which will bring more graduate students and research opportunities.

They just opened a new school for computing and data science which is going to be housed in one of the brand new buildings opening next fall.

US News changed its methodology which is why Tulane, Wake Forest, Northeastern all fell in the rankings. Google this.

BTW, 65% of students major in STEM and their CS department rises in US News's departmental ranking every year.
