The Dress that swept Capitol Hill - Tuckernuck Jackie

Anonymous
I don’t dislike tuckernuck but I refuse to buy the Jackie *because* it’s so ubiquitous. I will buy other things from there (on sale, obviously, because I’m not paying $300 for a polyester dress).

Not sure why everyone is shocked republican women are buying the dress. Go look at any of the women who work for Tuckernuck on instagram, half the time they are liking posts from Candace Owens and Allie Beth Stuckey from the very same accounts where their bios state “Tuckernuck employee”

The second photo with the hill staffer and the dog it's just an ill-fitting bunched up mess--too tight across the bust and her hips. I don't get the impression that it'll look any better when that poor girls stands up and pulls it down over her butt.

This and I’m sorry but the first girl at the RNC wearing it with running shoes and an Apple Watch. They should’ve gotten pics of a girl wearing it with nice flats with good accessories and a bag

So cringe.

Why would you worry about bra lines showing? are you embarrassed to wear undergarments?

I don’t know why you are like this but I hope you feel better soon.

If you are over 5'7", Tuckernuck isn't long enough to be professional. If you sit down, the skirt is at your mid-thigh. It's so annoying.

Honestly I am 5'3" and most dresses from Tuckernuck are on the verge of being too short for work. I wish they would make things longer. I know that they basically only exist to send free clothes to influencers to model, but if you want real women who actually work to buy your clothes, something where people can't see vagina when you sit would be great.

Thank you! I'm 5'6" and can't wear any of their stuff. The hems hit at the most awkward part of the leg, too. The proportions are off to me and they'd be so much better if they were 2-3" longer.

I think companies are too cheap to do it these days, but Banana Republic used to make everything a little long and then offer free hemming for anyone with a BR card ($10 otherwise, which was the same as my dry cleaner). I miss those days!

I don't buy Tuckernuck because they rip off other designers. They ripped off that woman who made striped shirts. They ripped off Oscar de la Renta with that long tunic caftan style dress with the red poppies down the front from the Spring 2019 collection. (Tuckernuck's was pale blue with red flowers instead of cream, and was conveniently taken down from the website after two days, so I suspect ODLR's lawyers were on the case.) Now they are ripping off ME+EM, a British knitwear designer, with a rip-off of the popular knit shift dress from last summer. Except instead of navy and cream, Tuckernuck made theirs black and white.

What kills me is when that woman with the striped shirts first came out and said they stole her designs, Tuckernuck pulled the victim card and had all their Georgetown cronies come to their defense in the comments. Then immediately went back to ripping off designs. Like, if you don't want people to think you rip off other designers...don't do it so publicly!

The man in the second pic looks like he's being held hostage.

Ok, well it looks nice in this picture because the model is thin and leggy. It is not a flattering dress on most women.

+100

Looks awful on 90% of people.

Honestly this is really mean but I refuse to buy the Jackie because I saw a linkedin post where an old woman was wearing it. She was like 5' and 200 pounds so it looked terrible on her.

Their founders and leadership are all from the same college and grad school network and a lot of them invested in the company and are quick to defend it and promote it. This is not unique to Tuckernuck -- lots of little corners of DC culture work this way. It works great for the people on the inside but yes it is kind of gross when the company or people who are being defended are acting shady. Have seen it more than once and it's not going to change anytime soon.

These women are the daughters of men who were part of real "old boys networks" and what they took from that is that there is power in using a group to advance and protect each other from criticism and competition. On the one hand I guess there is progress in it being a "middle age girls club" but on the other hand it still winds up being classist and racist and protecting people who are already very privileged from the consequences of their own actions so it's like weird sideways progress and ultimately maybe not that great.

For reasons I don't totally understand women who are short and curvy tend to be the most likely to wear this dress. It's very obvious from the photos on the website that it will look best on a woman with long limbs and even then probably needs to be tailored to fit just right.

I wonder if the appeal is that because the dress is very boxy it's not going to pull and be tight over a large chest or wide hips. Which it's true -- it doesn't. But it will also add width to these areas.

I think it can work on a short curvy woman if she's teeny tiny and she gets it tailored. Like I could see this on Reese Witherspoon when she's in her Draper James southern prep mode. With a pair of high heels in a neutral color and hair up to lengthen the neck. But it would only work because though she's short Reese is also little and she has great legs.

I think it's cute and I'd wear it, but not for $300. I'm short and simple knee length dresses work well for me. I spend a lot of my summer in sack-like shirt dresses already, though.

Listen, we are middle aged nerds who need simple dresses that we can count on. If this dress does it, so be it. Give us a break.
