Read the ED agreement to get some understanding. It’s very simple. |

Many pay for airfare & hotel with frequent flyer points--so the vacation may not be as costly as one might think.
Some schools do share ED information (not sure, but NESCAC might be one group of schools that shares such information). |
I’m not going to. My kid did not use ED, and got in RD. I’ve never read an ED agreement. Enlighten me. Does the ED agreement say in black and white the student has until X day to withdraw other apps and formally accept their ED school? If the student is still within the contract timeframe, you have no grounds for complaint. If not, you do. |
Then continue your lazy ignorance. I don’t understand? |
This happened to my high school when a student in the class above me was nominated and was offered one of those special 100% full ride (room, board, tuition, special summer internships, etc) scholarships and turned it down to go to Princeton (think Moorhead, Echols, etc). She had lied about her commitment to go to the scholarship schools, which is a big, fancy school often discussed on DCUM but she apparently wanted to go to Princeton instead. That university didn’t accept students from our school for about 5 years. It’s a medium size private in Virginia (not in the DMV). So it definitely can happen. |
Is this private or public HS? OP is talking about a HS in MCPS which probably have a lot of students. |
I conclude you have no grounds to complain. |
| This absolutely is your business! Contact college counselor and principal immediately. And, feel free to reach out to EA school, too — they should know who they’re dealing with. |
| i’d expose them anonymously to both schools. |
THIS!!! 100% Both schools will rescind. |
| Somebody call 9-1-1! Shawty fire burning on the dance floor! |

OP, ignore the MYOB jerks. They're probably cheating ED or considering it for their kid.
For those who keep making excuses about finances, most private ED schools use CSS to determine FA, and that would have been done Nov/Dec. So, this person is not likely waiting on FAFSA. Private schools w/ ED get numbers back asap via CSS. So, say the person couldn't afford the FA at the ED school as some claim. Then they should have withdrawn from that agreement. The can't hold on to the ED acceptance and shop other offers per the agreement they signed. They should also have withdrawn all other apps once admitted if the costs were in line with expectations (NPC). So, here's what you should do. Go to the resource teacher for counseling and/or the counselor for college admissions. Tell them in general terms you suspect a student is holding an ED while surfing other acceptances and that it is hurting other students at the school. Don't name names. Let the counselor look into it. Then move on. It's frustrating, but not much more you can do unless you want to band a circle of angry parents together around the offending parent, call out "Who violated the ED agreement" and all chant "She did," pointing a la Handmaid's Tale. That could be cathartic. |
I think there is a way to without being nosy. If they apply ED they are supposed to pull the other apps. You are not supposed to apply ED if you will not be able to commit. They have calculators on their websites for this reason. Some people are awful. The vacation should not be mentioned, OP, however if they don’t accept the ED they could screw over kids from that school in the future so college counseling should be aware if people are doing this. It is unethical. |
The high school is private. The college is a large state flagship often discussed on here because the OOS cap is so low. Student allowed herself to be nominated for the scholarship, went through the entire interview and competition knowing she wanted to go to Princeton vs letting the school nominate another worthy student. The school was mad, the college was mad.I have no idea if it was more the parents’ or the student’s decision but it have consequences. Just making the point that it can happen. Hopefully it doesn’t anymore and especially not to a large public high school with a large student population. |
