| Also, it seems like there needs to be some very serious new regulation of children who appear, or in this case star, in reality shows. |
I don’t disagree, but Jill Duggar was an adult when she signed the production contract with her father. I remember when Jill and Derrick left the show. Derrick had made some remarks about a trans child from a different TLC show. It seemed odd to gloss over that, and make it sound like it was completely Jill and Derrick’s choice to leave, because I think (or at least there was heavy speculation) that their departure was related to that. |

Jill and Derrick have come a long way, but they haven’t come as far as that - I think they may, in time get closer. But I think it is okay to acknowledge progress. |

This series, and the documentary that came out a few months ago on Hulu about the Falwells (God Forbid) have really opened my eyes to how deeply the so-called Christian right have infiltrated our political system. What they want is no less than theocracy. They really are like the Taliban. And of course they are led by giant hypocrites who are manipulating others for money and power. They are a huge threat to our democracy and our country’s values and we need to wake up and push back against this.
And for those who say it is “Christian bashing” well yes, it is if THIS is Christianity. If it’s not, then those who profess to be Christians who don’t agree with this also need to push back on this because the evangelical branding is taking over your religion. |
How, exactly would progressive Christians effectively "push back" against evangelicals? They consider us misguided heathens and wouldn't listen to us any more than they would listen to Muslims. We are on opposite sides of the culture wars and see each other as enemies. If you paint all Christians with the same brush, that's your misunderstanding and you'd be well served by educating yourself. |
I'm no expert, but it seems like there are so many more financial/educational/work hours and environment protections for child actors doing non-reality shows. As the documentary shows, child reality stars are working child actors, just with no compensation or labor protections. I think that as much as the documentary revealed, it also glossed over a lot of bad and criminal behavior. I don't know how you can bring up the Pearls without mentioning the children murdered by parents using the Pearls methods, for example. |
Well, there's only so much they can cover in one series. |
| the joshua generation movement stuff scares me and explains a lot about our current political climate. |
"The Family" on Netflix covers this too- scary stuff. |
Show up at school board meetings and speak out, get politically engaged, just like those of us who are secular do. I mean I don’t care; it’s your religion but if someone was giving my religion a black eye, I’d probably protest more vocally. It’s not on me to try to figure out who the “good” Christians are vs the crazy evangelicals. Not being one myself, I’m just going to assume that this is what the religion is because that’s all I really see in the public sphere. I’m just telling you that is what Christianity now looks to those of us who aren’t. Do with that what you will. Sort of like the GOP is now the MAGA party. I’m old enough to know about Bush etc but for my kids, there are no normal Republicans. |
Well, if you are going to prioritize something murder convictions might rise to the top. |
I enjoyed watching the Duggars and remember most of the episodes. Now looking back it puts a different light to decisions made by the family. I remember thinking it was so odd that the way they built their new house was that the girls bedroom could only be reached by going either through the parents room or right next to it and the boys bedroom was all the way on the other side of the house that couldn't be accessed easily from the girls room. There might have even been a separate staircase. Another episode explained that only the mom and the sisters had access to the password for the internet because the boys and Jim Bob might be tempted. Now knowing what was going on, it was so obvious that the parents knew and were hiding the abuse and then eventually downplaying the abuse. |
A theocracy is infiltrating our legislature, our laws, our medical care, and and our schools. It's becoming very hard to tell what kind of Christian is what. Right now, Christianity is taking over and most everyone isn't going to stop to ask what kind you might be. Are you out there fighting this? If not- why not. If you are, what are you doing to stop it? |
Or don’t. Like I said, I just don’t want to hear people complaining about “Christian bashing” when we complain about the evangelicals, because basically evangelicals appear to be the mainstream form of Christianity in 2023 and those people deserve to be bashed. |
