Duggar family documentary coming to Prime

Between the Duggar kids getting no financial benefit at all from their exploitation, the whole Gosselin family mess, and Jacob Roloff being molested by a producer, I'm embarrassed that I ever watched anything on TLC. Certainly not viewing anything on that channel again. What a bunch of gross voyeurs that we all enabled.

What they want is no less than theocracy. They really are like the Taliban. And of course they are led by giant hypocrites who are manipulating others for money and power. They are a huge threat to our democracy and our country’s values and we need to wake up and push back against this.

And for those who say it is “Christian bashing” well yes, it is if THIS is Christianity. If it’s not, then those who profess to be Christians who don’t agree with this also need to push back on this because the evangelical branding is taking over your religion.

How, exactly would progressive Christians effectively "push back" against evangelicals? They consider us misguided heathens and wouldn't listen to us any more than they would listen to Muslims. We are on opposite sides of the culture wars and see each other as enemies. If you paint all Christians with the same brush, that's your misunderstanding and you'd be well served by educating yourself.

A theocracy is infiltrating our legislature, our laws, our medical care, and and our schools. It's becoming very hard to tell what kind of Christian is what. Right now, Christianity is taking over and most everyone isn't going to stop to ask what kind you might be. Are you out there fighting this? If not- why not. If you are, what are you doing to stop it?

Or don’t. Like I said, I just don’t want to hear people complaining about “Christian bashing” when we complain about the evangelicals, because basically evangelicals appear to be the mainstream form of Christianity in 2023 and those people deserve to be bashed.

The Duggars do not represent mainstream Christianity, they are part of the quiver full movement that is more like a cult
Evangelicals do not oppose contraception, neither do the Catholics, despite what the pope says

Read the book Christian Nation if you want to be really scared.

What is it about this family that makes you hate them so much?
Just don’t watch the show
There are plenty of weirdo’s

I agree. I'm sad that I once watched all three shows.

That part was interesting but I didn’t understand how it related to the Duggars.

Josh worked for Family Research Council in DC and if his deviance wasn’t uncovered, most likely would have run for office. His younger brother tried and failed since then. The Duggars are very much politically minded.

I don’t hate the family at all. I feel sorry for most of them (not Josh or Jim Bob though). And I feel scared about the ways the culture they endorse has the potential to injure people.

The show was always about a wealthy family with lots of kids
Nobody is interested in a show about a large family getting by on a school teacher’s family, in a city ghetto and receiving food stamps, free and reduced meals, in a 3 bedroom apartment

I actually would (and have) watched shows about large families in those situations. My weird obsession with super large families is between me and my YouTube history (and now DCUM lol). I don’t actually/have never actually watched the Duggar show, I’ve just watched/read a lot of YouTube and blog content produced by both proudly quiver full families and also ex-IBLP people about how that specific culture works. Sure I could not watch it, but my point is you can find the Duggars representive of a social movement you want to know more about in either a positive or negative way. Not watching the show doesn’t change the existence of their religious/political movement.

Yeah I was shocked to learn that Jim Bob failed to win a state senate seat in Arkansas. He’s basically the Trump-loving MAGA base distilled to its purest form and yet he still lost in one of the most conservative states in the U.S. How did that happen?

I just finished watching -

* How the hell did adults get caught up following and believing Gothard who was a guy who never married and never raised kids but somehow knew all about both. Why the hell would you ever think he would have decent advice on either? He was just weird creepy white old guy in a suit.

* Spanking a 14 month all day? How did that even sound normal to an adult??? This is what one lady said on stage to an audience

* The creepy man pretend spanking a boy on stage at a conference and then telling him he needed to be spanked again bc he didn’t give a good enough hug? First the parents of that kid should be disgusted with themselves for letting that happen and clearly the guy is up to no good when not in the public eye.

* Now it’s clear why none of the duggar kids went to college. Their homeschool curriculum included such gems as “the hand is composed of living atoms” whatever that is supposed to mean. The adults would likely have to go back and first redo a real elementary school curriculum and then continue on.

* I am happy for Jill Duggar. Eventually some of her siblings will come around.

* Also some of the TLC contracts were signed by her parents and she was listed as a minor even though she was not a minor anymore.

* Jill explains that the other kids took a deal with the dad that would give him a cut of any media they - meaning the kids or as part of the duggar family franchise - to the dad in perpetuity. Jill didn’t take the deal.

* Patrick Henry College is in Purceville , VA about an hour outside of DC. When it first opened the only degree they offered was political science.

This isn't just about the Duggars and their show. It is real life for many people. It exposes Bill Gothard and the Pearls, IBLP etc. My dh and I grew up in homes with these beliefs and secrets. My sil raised her children according to BG and IBLP. The day my young adult niece put jeans on, she was shunned by her parents. Maybe it's similar to Leah Remini exposing Scientology? It's important to expose these abusive religions.

I’m fairly sure he lost the primary, so it’s not like he lost to a liberal democrat.
