Florida expands "Don't say gay" law to k-12

Yes they should, they are there to teach our children to be critical thinkers (you know analyze information and make their own informed judgment and opinions on all sorts of things). Critical and independent thinking leads to less people shooting people who accidentally knock on the wrong door or pull into the wrong driveway.

For all those who defended this because "little kids don't need to know about homosexuality" -- we told you this was coming.

Is desantis a closeted gay man or something? He seems obsessively focused on this non issue.

It’s hardly a non-issue. Fully support this and hope other states follow suit. There is simply no reason to be discussing/ promoting things like this in schools.

Screw you. The reason to discuss this is because sexual orientation is not a “choice” but a biological attribute. Too many gay people like me have committed suicide before adulthood because society told them that being gay wasn’t an option.

+1 and the bill supporters that were posting here are suddenly quiet because they don't want to admit they are homophobic.

So sexual orientation is ‘biologically determined’ but gender is fluid and based on a person’s feelings any given day?
Florida has done well to remove unscientific, incoherent, and predatory ideologies from the curriculum.

PS they can still say gay in school, and they can still read age appropriate books in school and have age appropriate discussions in school on both homosexuality and heterosexuality. However the era of grooming, pornography, and denial of parent’s civil rights is coming to an end.

No, they really can't "still say gay" in the classroom, not that there was any of it happening from an instruction point that the GOP is so afraid of. The statute was vaguely worded on purpose to create a massive chilling effect, coupled with a private right of action giving all the homophobes a way to sue the school should their kid ever hear anything that smacks of "woke gay talk" in the classroom, be it referring to "my husband" from a male teacher or god forbid a gay character in a book on the library shelf. That's not teaching "gay ideology" that's teaching a book that happens to have a gay character in it. Sort of like, I don't know, real life. It's * specifically designed* to have the chilling effect. That's its entire purpose and its way to be self-enforcing based on fear. Are you so willfully ignorant that you don't see that? Open your damn eyes you fool.

Please provide evidence from the actual bill or sworn testimony from those who claim mistreatment that discussion/behaviors as you stated have been proscribed (I’m aware of restrictions upon adult material within prek/elementary schools, obviously I’m fine with that).

You see my eyes are open, I do read, and I’m not compelled by uninformed hysteria or soundbyte propaganda. However if I misread the bill I’m willing to change my mind.

You are too dumb to argue with. The bill doesn't say "hey guys, let's legislate pure homophobia to the point that kids flee and go back into the closet. We're going to be super clear about that so no one can argue about what our intentions are" They create conditions so vague and so ripe for the slippery slope, and so full of fear mongering that it's just easier to avoid it all together. THAT's what's happening. Don't be so obtuse.

Unless you have a kid in these classrooms, sit down.

Makes perfect sense. Fully support

At what point can the federal government stop sending funds to the state teaching bigotry and hate? Let them fend for themselves after the next hurricane.

Huh? You never took sex ed? I fully support public school inclusion of sex ed including discussion of the fact that sometimes people have different orientation. My elementary school kid already knows that sometimes guys marry guys and girls marry girls, what are you so afraid of?

What are you afraid of?

Tell me. So in English class, are kids allowed at all to read a book about two gay people in love under this law? It's ok to read a book that discusses relationship difficulties if the characters are straight, but not if they have a different sexual orientation?

Still waiting for the answer on this one.

As I understand it, this is not an issue at all. The issue is the promotion/ teaching of this kind of thing in health-type classes.

I also support the Governor on this one, BTW.

How is it "promotion" to acknowledge that people have different sexualities? If you think mentioning gay sexuality is promoting it, then I am going to declare that mentioning hetero sexuality is promoting that lifestyle and it too should be forbidden. So basically, no sex ed at all. Back into the dark ages.

Remember when supports insisted this was only for elementary students? That lasted a few months

I think the bigger question is why do conservatives think it’s cool to be a bigot. They don’t even try to deny it anymore. They fully embrace having one of the most socially unacceptable and immoral character flaws. I don’t get it.

I can’t believe anyone can argue that schools should not teach controversial topics. To that pp, all of the above, and please get some perspective. Slavery was once a “controversial issue”. As was the slaughter of native Americans, the repression of women’s right to vote, the passage of the equal rights amendment, the Americans with disability act. Apartheid, genocide in Rwanda, the cultural Revolution of Iran - all were controversial topics. The reason we got rid of slavers and gave women the right to vote is because young people learned about these topics and made the change.

Instead, let's send the message to kids -- kids here -- that they're so offensive, the mere mention of people like them in a book is getting the book banned. Let's send the message directly to kids that only if the topic is people like them will confidentiality with a school counselor be breached. Let's send the message to kids that only when topics of people like them are broached in school with a counselor (NOT in the classroom, with a counselor or privately with a teacher) and their parents aren't immediately notified, the school can be sued. So they're left with no privacy where others are granted that same right. Only if it's kids like them.

You GOP'ers must be so proud of yourselves, legislating such hatred of children.

Whatever facade of neutrality you were trying to build in the first part of your post was destroyed by your fake-news rant at the end. We see through your propaganda. And the real groomers are Republicans. Tons of stories of them behaving badly around children, whether sexually or with guns. Like Kent Stermon, Desantis's buddy. Or here's a good resource for you:

I know a guy who committed suicide at 27 because he was convinced he was trans and had surgery before 18. He then realized at 21 he was actually a gay man but - surgery was done. Couldn’t live with himself.

My kid is in 8th grade and the "tone" in school went from possibly reluctant acceptance to all out bigotry and bullying after this passed. Pride Club (a VOLUNTARY club at the school, like all clubs are VOLUNTARY) announcements at lunch are now met with open jeering and boos, and the teachers feel powerless to stop it. You think the gay kids in school aren't affected by that?!

I'll tell you they are. Kid in 7th grade just ate a bullet two days ago in my daughter's school. That's the effect.

There's simply no point in this because there was NEVER any gay instruction to begin with. Absolute smoke and mirrors, and you people drinking this kool aid are to blame. That was a solution in search of a problem, because it just doesn't happen in the classroom. Here or anywhere. But as someone IN FLORIDA WITH A KID IN THE SCHOOL, there was never any instruction. Never. Can I repeat it. Never happened.

So there’s no bullying code-of-ethics at your kid’s school in Florida?

THAT’S your takeaway??? Dude. Mass booing- who are they going to go after and prove it was “that kid.” Then if they’re punished, and told why, uh oh, that’s instruction involving issues of sexuality. Booing gay kids is wrong. Grooming! Gay agenda! Lawsuit. GMAFB with this burying your head in the sand. Some of us live in the real world that you created.

Bigotry plain and simple.

If you’re a supporter of this nonsense don’t think for one second that the normal people around you aren’t thinking to themself that you’re a bigot.
