I went to a private high school that frequently has actual winners of this award, not just nominees.

I can’t remember anyone ever talking about it. It’s very prestigious, but it just wasn’t a factor.

Public school parents need to stop. It’s just kinda sad you’re making this into this huge referendum on public vs private schools.

Nominees are based on scores.
I am a private school parent who finds these numbers impressive. It says that this board puts all of its marbles in the Big 3 basket … when, in fact, they do very well but WIS is crushing it. Also, I love the fact that Walls and TJ, with their striving smart kids, are too. That means that Kahn Academy is the great equalizer and while I will be spending thousands for test prep it is thrilling to know that free works too. Way to go public school kids.

And St Albans actually have about 80 or more students, so the ratio is actually much lower at 2.5%. Same with NCS, the numbers of students is higher, and the ratio is also about 2%, both lower than GDS. Let's present facts accurately.

But GDS has 150 students, not 130, right?

Some, but not all, invitations to apply for the recognition are based on scores. "Application is by invitation only. We invite students to apply based on their scores on the SAT or ACT exam or their nomination by a Chief State School Officer (CSSO—The CSSO is the individual who heads each state education agency or state Department of Education.) or nomination from one of our partner recognition organizations...."

No, YOU are making stuff up.
STA and NCS classes of 2023 are both 75 kids.

year after year it's private school kids (Almost always STA, NCS and Sidwell) who actually win because that phase is not based on local officials but merit. bookmark this site and come back to it--one of the two STA kids will win in the end.

Don't count on it.

Last STA winner was in 2020. The other winner that year was from BASIS DC.

You had to dig for that public school winner though -- the prior poster had a point that most DC winners were in fact private school kids.

Why do so many students leave?

Are the Blair nominees all from its magnet program? The magnet program has about 160 per class, and 17 nominees. Why isn't Blair magnet given more press attention?

Also, what is this Presidential Scholar program, anyway? Is there only one winner by state? Which schools were the 2022 winners from?
