ACPS - Homecoming Only 1600 Kids Allowed

GM is on a pretty big lot. It's probably too close to ACHS but if they are going to put such a huge school there why not just make that a high school?

It can happen. Just send Wilson in, they all adore him. Ultimately, they just want the permits for their kitchen remodels and he gets that done for them so they'll go along with whatever he says.

As one of the zoning commissioners said (he lives over by Brooks and said it about his neighborhood) people need to start making sacrifices. The schools are massively over crowded. This NIMBY-ism has to stop. That is a HUGE lot. They are planning on a huge school anyway to replace what's there.

The city is going to have to get creative. I hear the old building is coming down so I hope the city looks at it with fresh eyes and uses every square inch of that lot.

Now that I’m thinking about it, my high school was about 4K and ours was in the school gym or local hotel ballroom that wasn’t huge. I never thought of it before but school dances must have had really low attendance. There wasn’t a limit who could buy a ticket.

LOL. Wilson is loved only by Del Ray. The rest of the city is ready to kick his a$$ out. Get what you want from him now because he and his cronies are gone at the next election.

The best plan would have been to turn Minnie Howard into a Class A sports complex and then ACHS into a high school fashioned after a junior college type of campus. We would have city-wide access to world class sports complex and make some money at the same time. Then the second high school should be in the GW building, and the middle school population over in the Central Office building, which isn't being fully utilized since most staff are WFH now. If we can put elementary kids in an office building then we can certainly put middle schoolers in an office building.

Whatever they do, they need to move quickly. Too bad some of that land on the Eisenhower corridor wasn't set aside for the school system or the city.

Does anyone have any information on this? Is there really a limit of 1600 or was that a false rumor?

Makes sense. GW was a high school, and so was Hammond. There were once three high schools just like Arlington.

These office buildings the city purchased to build schools on have absolutely no green space. I believe that the kids at Ferdinand T. Day play have a rooftop playground. I really find it appalling in a beautiful city like Alexandria that Wilson and the city council are so intent on building up every inch of green space that children in elementary school don't even have a grass feild to run on.

I agree to some extent about the green fields although when I was a kid we played on concrete so my perspective may be skewed. The experience didn't hurt us any and we still had fun. Of course, we played Dodge Ball and had Tether Balls and all those things that are verboten now because the balls are too hard and kids get apparently get hurt when they get hit. Since the middle schoolers don't have recess, they don't have team sports, and they can walk to the GW fields, I think it would be an acceptable option if their school moved to the Central Office building.

I didn't realize the Ferdinand kids didn't have a grass playground. Surely they can put some turf on the roof?

I wish that were true but it wasn't. They LOVE him in the GM neighborhood. He lied to their faces about adult housing at the school and they all still voted for him and are thrilled when he pays them any attention. He'll be mayor for life. And this council of his isn't going anywhere. Except for Gaskins, bet she runs for Beyers seat in the next four to six years.

He’s totally waiting for Beyer to retire. He’s relatively young and has much higher ambitions.

What are plans for the old Alexandria Hospital once the new one at Landmark opens? That would be an appropriate location for a second high school and the City could have negotiated for that land as part of the Landmark deal with INOVA.

Shut up about equity.
