It can happen. Just send Wilson in, they all adore him. Ultimately, they just want the permits for their kitchen remodels and he gets that done for them so they'll go along with whatever he says.

As one of the zoning commissioners said (he lives over by Brooks and said it about his neighborhood) people need to start making sacrifices. The schools are massively over crowded. This NIMBY-ism has to stop. That is a HUGE lot. They are planning on a huge school anyway to replace what's there.

The city is going to have to get creative. I hear the old building is coming down so I hope the city looks at it with fresh eyes and uses every square inch of that lot.

LOL. Wilson is loved only by Del Ray. The rest of the city is ready to kick his a$$ out. Get what you want from him now because he and his cronies are gone at the next election.

The best plan would have been to turn Minnie Howard into a Class A sports complex and then ACHS into a high school fashioned after a junior college type of campus. We would have city-wide access to world class sports complex and make some money at the same time. Then the second high school should be in the GW building, and the middle school population over in the Central Office building, which isn't being fully utilized since most staff are WFH now. If we can put elementary kids in an office building then we can certainly put middle schoolers in an office building.

I wish that were true but it wasn't. They LOVE him in the GM neighborhood. He lied to their faces about adult housing at the school and they all still voted for him and are thrilled when he pays them any attention. He'll be mayor for life. And this council of his isn't going anywhere. Except for Gaskins, bet she runs for Beyers seat in the next four to six years.

He’s totally waiting for Beyer to retire. He’s relatively young and has much higher ambitions.

I think that was true a few years ago but 1) he's something of a joke amongst his peers - Democratic mayors. I'm told that also includes the VA democrat establishment 2) Gaskins is on the scene now and is the rising star on the council. He's going to be totally eclipsed by her. He's not going anywhere.

I agree that I am not sure Wilson plays to the Eighth Congressional District that includes areas outside of Alexandria. His social media approach (appearing to engage with people but generally not actually doing anything in response to requests) and the fact that some of his social responses either show a lack of intelligence, judgment, or attention to detail to the wording of posts he likes or highlights) may turn non-Alexandria people off.

What a shame. Very short-sighted. Would have been a perfect space for another school, which is so desperately needed.

More and more housing development without added infrastructure for schools when they’re already overcrowded is a recipe for disaster.

Has anyone ever heard of another community that simply refuses on principle to add additional schools when existing schools are already overcrowded? This is such a strange phenomenon here. The funding is one thing but flat out rejecting the concept is beyond bizarre. Never seen anything like it…

Makes sense. GW was a high school, and so was Hammond. There were once three high schools just like Arlington.

It functioned well when Hammond was still a high school. The current plan makes no sense. I agree that a sports facility would have paid for itself

+1
And if they are going to allow the housing development then at least force more parking out of the developers. They are giving exemptions left and right and letting the developers pay minuscule contributions ($43k on a $14m development!?!)

This. Tons of townhouses. Because the more people we cram into Alexandria the better.

Yes, they are building more housing left and right with no plans for infrastructure roads and schools to accommodate the new residences. They built a city a Potomac yard and by Eisenhower yet not one new school built for those areas. City council's priorities are really terrible.

And they’ll keep doing it as long as they can. Developers are making money hand over fist with no thought to infrastructure, schools or traffic density. It’s horrible.

Wilson has been saying for years that the development doesn't bring kids to the area. School Board members have been citing consultants for years and telling people that development won't increase the numbers at the schools. I had a school board member swear up and down to me that Potomac Yards area wouldn't bring a single child into the school system. I said that was impossible. He said the consultants know best and they say no kids.

But now that they have been proven wrong, they'll pretend that this is what they've been saying all along and the racist residents of Alexandria are the ones preventing schools from being built.

ACPS and the City have plans in the near future to knock down George Mason and put a 60,000+sq foot school there. Same plan over at Cora Kelly. I think that's great but if that kind of space is needed at the elementary level...what happens when all those kids get to high school. How are they going to pack more kids into ACHS? It's insanity to not be planning a second (and third) high school right now. The can cannot be kicked any further down the road.

What board member? Are they still on the council?

Crazy! If they thought no kids were coming to Potomac Yard, why did they bother adding a large playground? So tired of Alexandria kicking this can down the road. We already probably need 3-4 more elementary schools, 1-2 more middle schools, and at least one additional high school. I don’t understand the refusal to address school capacity given how overcrowded the buildings are already. Are they really in denial about this?

They could have put a new high school over where Landmark Mall was but NOPE. They’re never going to do it. Not in my lifetime.
