ACPS - Homecoming Only 1600 Kids Allowed

Anonymous
I don't blame the parents for not allowing their kids to go to homecoming.

I just wish they would acknowledge the violence in schools and demand better instead of segregating their UMC kids and ignoring it.

Except for car dealerships that occupy arguably the second most prime piece of real estate in the hottest area of the entire city. Yeah, lets keep 3 blocks of MTV as one giant parking lot. Absurd.

Del Ray gets whatever it wants. Meanwhile on the west side...

Del Ray wanted retail, restaurants, and housing but got a used car dealership instead.

Except Del Ray also did not want a multi-story mixed use building in that location so a lot of them may think the status quo is better.

False.

I am not sure about that. A lot of people Del Ray support larger height buildings (ie the affordable housing waiver) …. except in Del Ray

No one want expanded height limits except developers and city council members who want to cram subsidised hosting everywhere including on school grounds!

The mayor wants expanded height limits. And so does Nate Macek who sits on the planning commission. He's very pro. The Brooks neighborhood better get ready. Macek said in a public meeting that it's time for his SFH neighborhood (and others) to make some sacrifices when it comes to expanded height limits.

LOL. Because Wilson and Macek have their hands in the developers back pockets. Why else?

Macek works for a very large construction and design company. And yes, the bulk of Wilson's campaign contributions come from that sector.
Anonymous
Wilson is a true believer. He's not doing this because of the campaign cash - that's a side benefit. He wants housing on school grounds, he wants density and huge buildings and even less green space. That is what he wants and believes in. Except for himself obviously. He'll stay in his single family home in del ray as will Macek and all of his other friends who like to say that single family homes and neighborhoods are dead.
Anonymous
Wilson is the ultimate NIMBY then. Great. So not only is he a crook but he doesn't care at all about his constituency. I guess we can be thankful that he at least is honest about that. What a jerk.

+1

People bought in Del Ray because they wanted cute bungalows with Metro access and walkability to shops, grocers and restaurants. If they wanted concrete canyons they could have bought in Arlington.

Wilson will destroy Del Ray.

Well it claustrophobic-those streets and lots. They would have been better buying in Lyon Village or Lyon Park for bungalows with that access and walkability and Metro, and much better commute to DC...as well as better public schools.

Comparing Lyon Village's amenities and retail offerings to Del Ray's?

Yeah. Del Ray is one tiny strip. There are so many new restaurants and options in Clarendon. We even got your Restaurant Eve recently--Bar Ivy. I was told the people in Oldtown/Del Ray are too old now and don't go out to eat so a lot of restauranteurs are now opening in Clarendon. The '7 Reasons' people are also opening one soon near Clarendon Metro. It's going higher end. The chain from Soho/Montauk/Upper East Side just opened her as well. The 2941, BLT steak also recently opened and it's really good.

What retail are you talking about in Del Ray--the dog store? We have one of those and some consignment shops too.

But, back to schools. Yeah--would have been better to go to APS for their public schools all the way K-12 and the much, much closer proximity to DC.

I heard Miyares visited ACHS and was shocked to find SROs there.

What happened to the Homecoming discussion?

Why is Wilson such a big supporter of larger height buildings if it's clear residents oppose it? Is he benefiting in some way? I'm not political so I'm not sure how this works - can the developers fund his campaign or something in exchange for expanded height limits?

Dreams of running for Beyers seat in congress when he retires. Campaign funded by developers and national association of real estate agents.

That ship has sailed. He's mayor for life.

Anyone else find it amusing that VA-8 has only every elected rich old white men to Congress?

Well, Wilson ain't rich or white so he's screwed.

He's not white?
