They should turn the new McArthur building into a high school. It's gigantic.

It’s very poorly designed. There is actually a huge, open courtyard in the center of the building that opens in a V toward the east end of the property.

Then where would the current McArthur elementary students go to school?

It was designed like that so all classrooms would have natural light/ windows and face the forest at the back of the school. In my opinion the school is designed well making use of the small lot.

No, a prior iteration Forest design had that as well, but was much less imposing and not so close to the front of the lot. The size increased to increase circulation. And at a significant cost.

Play space, but it’s questionable is it can be used as that, or if it will be more of an outdoor classroom.

Add to that number the gang and "crew" problems at ACHS that the Chief of Police discussed publicly a few weeks ago. Does the St. James have enough insurance?

I was being cheeky but seriously, maybe wherever they've been going for the last few years. Whatever they're building is insanely huge, I drive by it several times a day, every day. It legit could be a second high school. Why in the world does there need to be an elementary school that size?

It is huge. The old Patrick Henry (the current MacArthur swing space) is only supposed to be used as swing space for MacArthur. And that is already way past the original timeline. I believe that was promised to the community. It's a lot of pressure and traffic and that can't go on indefinitely. But the city has a long (decades and decades) history of screwing over residents on things like this so it could happen.

They are prepping an old office building to be a swing space for when they tear down and rebuild George Mason (+60,000 sqf) and Cora Kelly (+60,000 sqf) in the coming years. After that, it will be used for a new elementary. Not sure where the kids at Minnie Howard are going.

OP - can you come back and post where you heard this? Or at least post it anonymously on the school’s parent page?

I thought Minnie Howard was being handled like Jeff Houston: construct the new school where the field is and when finished tear down old building.

Is this because they are worried about half the school being out sick afterwards?

It is. Construction is happening now and the old school is still open.
