I noticed that there are positions for 3 (!) physics teachers. Since one of my kids is taking Physics next year, this is a little worrisome. I wonder if it is related to the delay in the Justice addition that was supposed to be started in the fall but has been derailed because of opposition from some community members over parking. The new addition includes a cafeteria expansion, a three-story addition of classrooms, science labs, and special education spaces. I know teachers are frustrated with the crowded space.

It takes a special teacher to want to teach at Justice and my kids have had some really great ones. I hope this is just an anomaly and they find some good replacements.

The addition is starting this summer. They're is no parking now and staff routinely has to park on the street. They're answer is to take away 50 staff parking places and not replacing it

The community activists told the county the park across the street was more important than parking. They apparently expect staff to ride bikes or park in the neighborhood and get tickets.

Or, perhaps, there are other solutions to parking than paving over a park.

For instance, why is a low parking garage not proposed as an option?

They couldn't get approval for a parking garage. Does any school in Virginia have a parking garage, seems like it would raise safety concerns.

As for paving over a park, have you seen the plan? They were going to use an overgrown area that is filled with trash for parking.

Alexandria does

Great, Alexandra City has ONE high school, Fairfax has 20+. It’s also on a major road and not tucked back into a neighborhood. The parking lot was proposed to be on a small part of the park and for that use FCPS was going to fix up the park which is currently a mess. Instead, we are back to square one and teachers and students will have at least another year with insufficient facilities.

Teachers are leaving Justice left and right, and their solution is to take away their already maxed out parking. Nothing will recruit teachers and boost morale like parking a half mile plus away and having to walk to work.

I’m so sorry. I heard one person suggest teachers take a shuttle bus from the Sears parking lot.

One of the presentations suggested that they are still adding a net 20 additional parking spaces, though some of it is on the street where the school is located and they needed an exemption from the county not to add more parking, given the size of the expansion. It really doesn’t sound like parking is the biggest challenge the school is facing right now.

Yep that was one suggestion.

There's literally not enough parking for staff right now. They are taking away 50 spots this summer and only adding 20. Not to mention the school is growing, not getting smaller.

Bummer. Another instance of really poor planning in FCPS.

And whose fault is it that part of the park is overgrown? The community's? Or the county's?

I work at a middle school in Arlington with a terrible parking situation. I have absolutely no plans to leave because I love working there. Lack of parking can be annoying but I don’t think most teachers would leave a school they liked because of that. We leave schools when we are overwhelmed, when little duties keep being piled on us, when no one has our backs, when we have no control, when we have no access to resources, when we get no respect.

Justice currently has the highest number of vacancies but other schools also have a lot of turnover this year. Principals have already filled many positions for next year for staff that have resigned.

I work at Justice and have for 10+ years and I've never seen turnover like right now. Almost the entire science department will be gone next year, lots of English teachers are leaving. I think the turnover is higher than when Calhoun was the principal. Penny and Maria really got the school back on track, but this year has been abysmal.

I would really appreciate a "root cause" explanation for why the high turnover is occurring. How much is due to overall teacher burnout post-Covid, how much relates to the parking situation, and how much relates to a principal who doesn't have control over her school? Or is it racist teachers who cannot accept that they must answer to a Black principal?

With all of the high schools hiring in FCPS, do you really think a racist teacher would choose Justice?

Some people don't mind being in a position of power over minority students. It's different to report to a POC. The Black principal of Justice just took over this year.

Ms. Eck is Hispanic. They've been reporting to a person of color for years.
