how much oatmeal do you eat in one serving?

This morning I had 3/4 cup of oatmeal (dry, with 1.5 cups of water, a ton of blueberries, a dash of salt, and a sprinkle of brown sugar) and it seemed like enough. But it probably won't feel that way for long. I'm sure by the end of the week I will be back to my one full cup.

I think I am just a volume eater - I need a quantity of food to feel satisfied. Luckily I have pretty healthy taste in food - but, like, I'd never be a "one square of good dark chocolate for dessert" person - if I am eating dessert, I am EATING DESSERT. (I rarely eat dessert.)

I guess at the end of the day, of all the things to gorge on, oatmeal is hardly one to worry about. (I didn't open this thread because I was worried; just curious! Also so surprised by my friend's two tablespoons, and how it compared to my GIANT BOWL!)

OP, I'm the oatmeal with yogurt poster from the page 1 and the thing that strikes me is how many people make their oatmeal with milk/almond milk! I wonder if that's why they find 1/3-1/2 cup so much more filling? Anyway, agreed that a giant bowl of oatmeal is hardly a diet ruiner. Enjoy!

The container says the serving size is 1/2 cup, and that's what I used to eat. Then it crept up to a heaping 1/2 cup, then to 3/4 cup. I'm trying to hold myself at 3/4 cup! I add a couple of walnuts broken up and some raisins. PP who is allergic to walnuts, try pecans instead. I also have frozen berries (a small plateful), and I was eating a whole banana too... but over the last few weeks I've cut out the banana to try to reduce my daily caloric intake. I miss them!! But I need to get my weight back down where I want it, and I'm also thinking about how much I'm spending on food.

I'm diabetic, 1/2 cup cooked is considered a serving. I usually eat 1 cup cooked and just count it in my daily carbs.

If I ate as much oatmeal and additions as you, op, I'd have a terrible stomach ache.

Holy cow PP - that is a lot of food. Are you male or female? Or are you an athlete? also how old are you?

I'm 57M, and I eat 1/2 cup oatmeal with 1 cup water (nuked in microwave) plus 3 eggs with melted cheese, bacon, and coffee as my usual breakfast. This is to give me energy for my 6am workout 5x a week.

The only thing I'll say against oatmeal is that it doesn't lead to lasting satiation. If I eat just the eggs and bacon, I'll be full until lunch, but if I eat the oatmeal as well, then I'll be ravenous at 11am.

Funny you should say that. I'm 56, Female, workout in the morning 6x a week. Oatmeal leaves me hungry 30 mins after eating it. I have to do mostly protein to stay satiated.

As in you eat 2 breakfasts daily? Or you eat one or the other of these options?

I eat 2 breakfasts each day, at 5:30am and 9am. Lunches at 11 and 2. A snack at 4 if I'm hungry. Dinner at 5pm and nothing more til morning. I have reflux, which acts up if I go to bed with food in my stomach.
your metabolism is awesome!!!

NP and that is a normal amount of food. Stop shaming someone for being healthy. Constantly dieting and limiting yourself is bad for you mentally and physically.

No that's not a normal amount of food. Stop trying to justify being overweight.

NP. I am definitely not overweight and I eat probably as much as PP, roughly 2600 calories on average in my case. I am 40-yo, I lift weights almost daily but would not call myself an athlete. What she described really is not that much food.

I don't eat oatmeal, because I am hungry 30 min later again and also because it makes me fart up a storm.

Thank you! I started worrying that I eat too much after seeing the responses, but I am healthy and have no weight issues.

Then clearly you are not eating too much!

I eat it this way too. Though I usually have a piece of toast before bed so I can sleep more soundly. I prefer smaller meals spread out through the day because my blood sugar dips so quickly.

I only eat two flakes, you're such a fatass.

Well, I’m a size 4 - 5’6ā€ 135lb. My apologies that some of us are active and can handle eating more than our toddlers.

Actually I would bet I'm more active than you, you just have a much bigger appetite.

NP, that's not a lot of food, unless the second breakfast is 4 eggs, 4 slices of toast and a pound of fruit. That's basically a snack (oatmeal), breakfast (PP's "second breakfast"), small lunch, snack ("second small lunch") and a small dinner. I'm 5'6, 118lbs and I eat more than this (typically a normal sized dinner plus a snack before bedtime).

I eat 1/3 cup of oatmeal, 2 tablespoons of flax seeds with 1.5 cups of water and .5 cup of almond milk. When it is done cooking, I splash a bit of lactaid milk on it, stir and add blueberries.

I just started this routine a few months ago and I love it. My blood pressure is way down (I don't know if it's this) but my weight is up. Not sure if it's the oatmeal..

Anonymous wrote:I you talking one cup cooked or one cup raw? That makes a huge difference.

I tend to measure 1/3 of a cup raw and cook that with double the amount of milk (or sometimes vanilla protein drink). Add half a cup of berries and just a few chopped walnuts/almonds.

I am NOT a small person, but that fills me up.

Raw! I measure out one cup, put in two cups of water, and cook it. 1/3 of a cup fills you up? Can I ask how much you eat for lunch or dinner? I usually have a sandwich or leftovers for lunch, and a normal dinner.

One cup raw! That's 2-3 servings.

Unclutch your pearls. One cup dry is maybe 350 calories. Even if you cook with some milk and add a bit of sugar or fruit it may be a 500 calorie breakfast which is perfectly appropriate.

That's more than 500 calories.
