how much oatmeal do you eat in one serving?

Anonymous
I cook oatmeal for myself most mornings, piled with berries. I usually make one cup for myself. It fills me up till lunch.

I was talking to a friend yesterday who told me she eats two TABLESPOONS of oatmeal with berries and a little almond milk. I can't even imagine that filling me up for an hour! Then I saw another recipe somewhere - here, I think - where someone said they make one cup of overnight oats (mixed with some things) that lasts a week.

Am I eating an insane amount of oatmeal? Or do most oatmeal eaters just not get so hungry, so they have naturally small appetites or something?

Before anyone asks: I'm not the skinniest person you ever met but I'm not a big person - 5 feet, about 123 pounds - and walk a lot but am not out running marathons. I would say I probably have a pretty normal appetite (I thought?!).

I you talking one cup cooked or one cup raw? That makes a huge difference.

I tend to measure 1/3 of a cup raw and cook that with double the amount of milk (or sometimes vanilla protein drink). Add half a cup of berries and just a few chopped walnuts/almonds.

I am NOT a small person, but that fills me up.

I eat 1/2 cup of oatmeal with a healthy serving of walnuts, raisins and yogurt as one if my most filling breakfasts so your serving size sounds normal enough to me, OP. I eat a whole cup (still plus yogurt/nuts/etc) when pregnant or nursing. But also I know people who don’t do breakfast at all or just have like a cup of coffee and a granola bar so I think it’s just a different times of day different people like to eat kind of thing. As well as of course different people having different metabolisms and different metabolic needs.

Raw! I measure out one cup, put in two cups of water, and cook it. 1/3 of a cup fills you up? Can I ask how much you eat for lunch or dinner? I usually have a sandwich or leftovers for lunch, and a normal dinner.

To clarify: I do my oatmeal as 1/2-1 cup raw rolled oats and I cook it in water then put the yogurt/nuts/berries on afterward.

This is OP - and that sounds delicious. Maybe I will add some yogurt tomorrow. I usually have strawberries or blueberries with mine - no nuts (I'm allergic to walnuts).

OP note that this person is cooking 1/3 cup oats in 2/3 cup milk or protein drink = 1 cup total. You’re cooking 1 cup oats in 2 cups water (which has no caloric content). Didn’t seem that different to me.

I cook 1/2 c oatmeal in 1 cup water and eat it plain with my coffee, which is 10oz, 1 tsp sugar and a bit of whole milk. That is breakfast #1. My second breakfast is typically eggs, toast with butter and fruit. I have 2 small lunches and 1 small dinner.
If I ate as much oatmeal and additions as you, op, I'd have a terrible stomach ache.

Yeah but I am only eating one breakfast! If I ate as much breakfast as YOU do I'd have a terrible stomach ache. I feel like I am getting a good insight into how each of us needs different things to get through our day feeling good.

Holy cow PP - that is a lot of food. Are you male or female? Or are you an athlete? also how old are you?

One serving per the box is what I eat. Which is either 1/2 c rolled oats or 1/4 cup steel cut- uncooked, cooked in 1 cup water. Both of these measurements work out to about 1 cup cooked oatmeal.

How would you even cook 2 Tbs oatmeal?

I generally prepare whatever the label says is 2 servings, usually 2/3 cup of steel cut oats in milk (whatever the label says is the proportion). I add berries and nuts. That makes 2-3 servings for me, sometimes 4, depending on how I’m feeling. I usually also eat a whole banana on the side. I’m about 120 pounds, fwiw.

NP and that is a normal amount of food. Stop shaming someone for being healthy. Constantly dieting and limiting yourself is bad for you mentally and physically.

No that's not a normal amount of food. Stop trying to justify being overweight.

My steel cut oats show 1/3 cup as 1 serving. I add 1 cup milk to that and cook. I have never measured the end product. 3 times that amount would not fit in my bowls. I would have to use a serving bowl.
