Anyone watching Mare of Easttown?

The kid grabbed his dad’s secret burner phone, texted Erin, and told her to meet at the park. Why didn’t the police see this text? WTH? They should have been able to trace it.

I came here to post this. I'm confused by this too. And if Erin texted to John's primary phone via her burner, why was it programmed as Erin? Why not program it as "Dentist" or some other alias?

I also don't get why she is ok planting drugs on her grandson's mother but is not ok letting the killer off the hook. The character's motivations aren't consistent. She sometimes lets people off the hook and sometimes doesn't. The number of red herrings was also a bit too much. But I love Kate Winslet so I still like the series.

John said that Erin called him on his regular phone that night (presumably from her burner), and that upset him. Ryan’s flashback to the party jibes with that. When Ryan later texted her from John’s phone, posing as John, she had just texted him, presumably from her actual phone, 5 minutes prior. She was escalating and pressuring John to meet her at the park by starting to communicate via their actual phones. She was trying to show him that she would be good on her word to out their affair if he didn’t do what she wanted.

As PPs pointed out, this never in a million years would have been deemed an acceptable custodial placement in reality.

I can’t remember if she is raising DJ because the paternity became public or because she is Erin’s closest family. John is locked up so I can see why they might feel growing up with family is best for the child.

She didn’t want DJ. She took him because John begged her.

But if it was from Erin's actual phone, wouldn't the cops have seen the random late texts and calls from her personal cell (via phone records) and tried to track the mystery number/burner phone? There was no discussion of that...

There was actually a great deal of mentions of tracking her cell records immediately after the murder. Mare talked about how long the cell company might delay, etc. I believe that is how they found out that the priest was her last call.

Which is why it makes even less sense...

I wanted to see some kind of growth from Mare, in particular. But as far as I can tell, she didn't really grow or change at all. She planted drugs on her grandson's mother and she ended up relapsing... that is HORRIFIC. I realize she didn't use the drugs that Mare planted her but Mare actively undermined an addict.

Her "big moment" at the end is that she is willing to go look in the attic and ... think about Kevin? It's unclear.

I also thought it was beyond ridiculous the way she and six other cop cars rolled into a junior high school, lights going ... at the exact moment Kevin was on the playground? What the heck?

Even though it would have been difficult ethically, part of me would have rather seen her choose to delete the video of the incident... simply because it would have been unexpected. Instead we see yet another example of Mare being a stickler and unwilling to deal with her own shit. Although I suppose you could argue that it is a weird inversion of the time she deleted the video of the graffiti guy.

So much potential but I felt very unsatisfied by that ending.

The drug planting is at the halfway point. She does show growth toward the end.

If you're one of the people saying that Mare shows growth as a character, I'd love to know what specifically you're thinking of.

Yes I know. No mention of that; "that" = calls and text to a John's burner phone. With all the phone record discussion, there was no mention of a mystery burner phone in the records. Which goes back to my previous points that it's a plothole.

DP.

Giving therapy a real try.
Talking to her mother about her childhood.
Being kind(ish) to Kevin’s baby mama.
Being kind to ex-husband’s new wife.
Waiting on backup before picking up kid.

Calling the "Family meeting" in the first place after her therapy to tell her mom and daughter what she did
Reaching out to Lore again months later after being shut out, and being gentle and quiet in that encounter
attending her ex-husband's wedding, when previously she did not go to the engagement party

The only mistake was they never showed either burner being hidden or destroyed.

John and Billy would have taken it when they moved the body

I know they had a semi-private conversation where he asked her to raise him, I just don’t remember if the real paternity was made public to the other characters. For example does Mama Bailey think Lori is raising DJ as her husband’s son or as her cousin’s son? I could see either placement being judged best (raised be family) but it seems less odd as the latter considering John is locked up and she was already approached about adopting DJ.

Those wouldn’t be in Erin’s primary phone records. They didn’t know about the burner

+1 Not even in Easttown, where things are done a bit differently. The Chief wouldn’t have welcomed Mare back on the force after she planted drugs on Kevin’s mother, either. I decided to suspend my disbelief because it was a great series despite those oddities or holes.

The Chief thing didn't bother me as much. It was never proven and nobody other than the three of them knew it. I wouldn't be surprised if things like that are swept under the rug sometimes (for good or bad reasons). If it was public knowledge, it would be very different...
