What a bizarre thing to latch on to. Shows us where your priorities are. I think you forget about the age of consent. In many situations it’s lower than 18.

I’m pretty sure Siobhan is 18 already. She’s a senior and has already turned in her applications to college.

I thought making her gay with the black girl was purely PC. Just an add on for diversity sake.

So you're saying that if that subplot had been with a white man you would have seen no issue? Or that we didn't need an insight into her love life at all?

If it is the former, well you don't understand the world we live in and I'm not sure I can get into that. If it is the later, I sort of get that, but it is always enriching to a story to see shades about characters. If it was all about THE MAIN PLOT, that whole series would have been an hour long.

I thought it was boring and such a cliche. She’s beautiful she’s talented and she’s gay too!! And in addition to being gay and creative she has. ….. wait for it …. Gonna be a big surprise…. Black girlfriend !

I think they gave Siobhan this depth to show that despite the tragedy in her family she was still just a teenage girl, working through stuff, trying to get to the next step and work through her grief all at the same time.

I think they did give her like, one or two many too tropes, but I was actually more rolling my eyes at the 'she's in a band that performs at her dad's house and at his wedding' than the love life stuff which seemed fine. She also had a white girlfriend. Her whole story was about straddling the line between moving on the way she was and her dad was and sitting in the interminable grief the way her mom was. The pull between feeling responsible for Drew and wanting to go out on her own. I think showing this rich personal life was a way to show that.

I know this is getting tangential, but I can't help myself. The fact that you see the fact that she has a black girlfriend as in any way notable or forced or "different" is the exact point of why representation is important. Do you really think it is that uncommon for a girl in the suburbs of Philadelphia where there are a dozen small colleges to have a black girlfriend?

What if they just did a casting call for the girlfriend character without specifying race at all? And this actress happened to fit the part?

Media generally does not represent mixed race or same sex relationships at nearly the rate that they exist in the world. If people keep calling out when they do as "forced" than how does it ever become NOT forced?
Anonymous
^^ Agree with this. It didn't even occur to me they were hitting any kind of diversity box. Several other characters in the show were black. And the radio dj girlfriend was just older and confident and beautiful. I thought that was her purpose and why that actress was cast.

He was in a position of power. It was abuse. Incest.

Strictly speaking, no, it was not incest. It was her dad's cousin. Legally she could marry her own first cousin and it not be incest. Her dad's cousin is a few relations further away from that. You're focused on the wrong thing.

He was an adult peer of her dad's who was married with kids.

It was raping your cousin’s kid. Wrong on many levels.

Yes, if she was under the age of consent - was she? I thought she was 17...
But anyway, it was wrong on many levels but it was not incest.

I'm from that area and was super close to my cousins growing up - we were basically siblings. They were also a very close family. I'd call it incest regardless of any technical definition.

It started two years ago. He raped his cousin's kid.

Then you'd be an idiot. Incest has an actual definition, not your definition or anyone else's. Like Sky or Ocean, you can't redefine them due to your preferences.

incest
[ in-sest ]
noun
sexual intercourse between closely related persons.

https://www.britannica.com/topic/incest
Incest, sexual relations between persons who, because of the nature of their kin relationships, are prohibited by law or custom from intermarrying.

They were "closely related persons" and it's taboo in our culture for them to marry. Hint: if the person

The only one misunderstanding language here is you.

The big question is why are you so irrationally defensive about the word "incest". Did you marry your cousin's teen?

Is it illegal to marry your cousin's daughter, your 2nd cousin. I'm pretty sure it is not. The definition talks about intermarrying. If it's ok to marry, then it's not exactly incest. It's pretty close and I would call it incestuous but they aren't forbidden to marry so it doesn't meet the definition.

Throwing myself into the nitpicker’s nest- your cousin’s daughter would be your first cousin, once removed.

And you can legally wed. It’s weird and a bit too close for most, but not incest. The age difference is the bigger issue.

It is a soap essentially, dressed up as an limited drama series. But it is still a soap.
