MCPS delayed Thursday?

Anonymous
My neighborhood is maybe halfway plowed and the streets and sidewalks are way too slippery for my kid to walk to the bus stop, so I will have to drive her. Luckily I’m able to do that. If I couldn’t, I would keep her home. And we are close in, near the DC line.

All the people who want schools to be closed tomorrow…where does it stop? Do we wait until sometime later next week when it warms up enough that all the snow melts? There will be some amount of snow and ice at least through the weekend. At some point, kids need to go back to school and conditions are ok enough to do that.

I don’t want school to be closed tomorrow but I also realize it is a tough decision and we don’t know the big picture and all the factors they need to consider. If they change the status to closed tomorrow I imagine they have good reason to make that call.

Where are the pictures? The comments in posts from today don't have any of schools. At least, I don't see any. What post are you looking under there?

Right! Because the pictures aren’t there it just mean all schools are plowed

There are lots of pictures posted under the thread, "How are the schools near you looking?"

Scroll thru, there are lots of pictures, all from this afternoon/evening.

Thanks. Oddly I needed to sign in on a desktop browser to get that post to come up.

One interesting thing about that thread is that there are several pictures showing obviously-plowed lots where the poster is just upset there's still snow showing.

e.g., Greenwoods ES, Beverly Farms ES, College Gardens ES, Brooke Grove ES, Argyle MS, Clarksburg HS, Kennedy HS, Damascus HS are all cases where the poster was ostensibly claiming the school was bad, but then posted a picture of a plowed lot! Wacky.

Ones like Silver Creek MS were quite bad, but subsequent posts said they were cleared.

I don't think people know what plowed snow looks like. If you don't use salt, and we generally don't, there's going to be a layer of snow. That's what you're seeing in most cases. Don't let the color scare you. You can drive and walk on it.

Okay, well, I disagree. Most of those pictures of bus loops don't look safe for a bus to drive on, and I personally looked at Oakland Terrace's about an hour ago and it looks bad too.

Lol - DH and I walked by OTES around 6:15 this evening. The bus loop is clear and dry (and was entirely snow-covered yesterday). The parking lot is fine. The only thing not fine is the car drop-off loop.

Cleanup is inconsistent. Some parking lots have been cleared, some car loops have not and bus loops as well. If every kid could be dropped off via a car right at the front door of their school, schools would not close. And if they offered valet parking for staff members so they don't have to walk from a parking spot to front doors of their school, schools would be open. These things are not possible as many students rely on school or county buses to get to and from school. And not all those bus stops were cleared, in fact, where there would normally be a bus stop those areas are now occupied by 5 ft high pile snow

Not necessarily. It says they WILL be reevaluating by early morning and if necessary will announce a closure by 5 am

They often say something similar. Nothing in the weather tonight will make the conditions worse. If they thought they were ready tonight, they're going to be ready tomorrow.

They aren’t ready tonight. Rumor is that some MCPS cronies were unhappy with Thomas announcing closures so early. So I predict he did this to buy time before announcing a closure. Sad that he gave in to the MCPS bullies still trying to run the show

If they close again tomorrow, they should have to provide proof. List the schools that aren't ready, say what isn't ready, and provide photos. Whether the mistakes were with district crews, the contractors, or the building staff, they won't happen again after being publicly shamed.

You mean he closed before MCEA told him to close? That's a pretty serious offense.

Yep. They prob wanted to call closed already but knew parents' reactions. They may be waiting until morning to decide whether to call Code Red or Code Orange latter being childcare in school buildings may be open.

If schools aren't open for child care providers, I'm bringing my kids to Carver. Or Taylor's house.

And then what? You can’t go inside. Even if you got in, you can’t leave them there and go to work. You’d just be inconveniencing yourself and subjecting your kids to the cold.

They yell/cry pretty loud. Someone will let them in if admin offices are open.

You won’t get further than the front lobby without an appointment. I work for MCPS and I can’t even use my ID to stroll into Carver to use the bathroom.

Once you’re in the lobby, what is your plan? Hopefully your kids are too young to be embarrassed when you are escorted out.

I'll come back for them after my doctor's appointment is over. Maybe. The'll have fun running around for a few hours.

At least it’s clear now that you’re just trolling.

We'll see. If schools don't open I don't currently have an other option. It isn't to line up child care for kids with special needs.

I call troll, but if not good luck with CPS after you pull this stupid stunt.

CPS won't take kids with special needs.

I know this may be hard to believe, but you can actually drive - and yes, even walk - on packed down snow and ice. It won’t cause instant and unavoidable death, injury, or permanent disfigurement.

If the standard is bare pavement everywhere, see you all in February.

I lived in Ohio for ten years. Yes you can drive on snow and ice but my Dodge Daytona would disagree. (Totally totalled.) :p

You are deeply deluded if you believe that.

There are a couple of people here who would love to make kids go virtual all winter. Of course, we can't do that, but those people aren't grounded in reality.

Because, as we all know, no one has ever totaled a car in temperatures above 32F.

But you might slip and perhaps fall!

That PP who said they walked to Oakland Terrace tonight was frankly being a little reckless.
