🤔

none of the entities bolded are responsible for the safety of children.

So because central office staff (ADULTS) are allegedly "responsible for the safety of children", that's why they couldn't work yesterday or today?

don’t be obtuse.

Did you not see I was comparing those organizations to MCPS offices?

Yes which was dumb

Why? Why can't MCPS offices be open to manage the response and get kids back in school ASAP?

Most MCPS offices are not school front offices and can’t do anything to help.

What do those people do? Why do they get paid during the summer, for example?

We're to believe every local government in the area is open and providing services, but nobody is around to open schools for childcare providers?

They handle things that have to occur year round such as special ed paperwork compliance, buying supplies, overseeing construction…

So they could have been working since Tuesday like literally everyone else, but instead got free days off.

Feds got tomorrow day off while others are working. Will that anger you, too?

Plow are all over the place (I saw one plowing Silver Creek MS yesterday, so not sure why someone upthread says it's not clear.)

Yes there will be some messy sidewalks still. Yes, the low income kids who don't come to school when it rains because they lack weather-proof clothing may not come to school when there is still snow on the ground. But most kids can get safely to most schools 3 days after an 8" snowfall. How is it possible that anyone thinks it's reasonable to keep them home another day? And what happens next week if there's more snow?

I agree. And I am a teacher at one of those low income schools. We all need to go back. This is ridiculous.

Yep. They prob wanted to call closed already but knew parents' reactions. They may be waiting until morning to decide whether to call Code Red or Code Orange latter being childcare in school buildings may be open.

If schools aren't open for child care providers, I'm bringing my kids to Carver. Or Taylor's house.

And then what? You can’t go inside. Even if you got in, you can’t leave them there and go to work. You’d just be inconveniencing yourself and subjecting your kids to the cold.

They yell/cry pretty loud. Someone will let them in if admin offices are open.

You won’t get further than the front lobby without an appointment. I work for MCPS and I can’t even use my ID to stroll into Carver to use the bathroom.

Once you’re in the lobby, what is your plan? Hopefully your kids are too young to be embarrassed when you are escorted out.

It’s public property. If admin offices are open, she can remain in the lobby all day really.

PP, that’s for a completely different reason.

All the people who want schools to be closed tomorrow…where does it stop? Do we wait until sometime later next week when it warms up enough that all the snow melts? There will be some amount of snow and ice at least through the weekend. At some point, kids need to go back to school and conditions are ok enough to do that.

MCPS needs to get it's act together. Announce it the evening before, or stock to what you've said. What's the point?

I'll come back for them after my doctor's appointment is over. Maybe. The'll have fun running around for a few hours.

Clearly, yes. Several posters have cited the below-freezing temperatures as reason to close. They want the snow to be gone before school reopens.

Feds are going to be working tomorrow to catch up on a small portion of the work they missed the last 3 days.

Once it turns to ice it is hard to plow. This area depends on melting to clear snow. That’s not working this week. The guys doing the plowing didn’t get down to the bare pavement from what I saw at a lot of the schools.

That's what salt is for. Laying down brine only works on the first bit of snow but eventually it gets too diluted. You have to put ice down to melt ice that accumulates.

Ugh. No, that's not what they're doing. If they wanted to get fully straight to pavement everywhere, they'd have to use salt. They're not. They're using sand. The gives you traction on the snow.

They expected people to realize you can drive on snow and ice. I guess that's too much for some people to understand.

We'll see. If schools don't open I don't currently have an other option. It isn't to line up child care for kids with special needs.
