She can sit on it but if she doesn't sign it it becomes effective. The only way to kill the bill is to veto it.

Dave Marsdsen stood before a meeting of neighborhood Democrats, about 100 or us, as the main speaker and never mentioned the casino. The only reason he was there was to inform us of upcoming issues. This was a year+ ago. Never mentioned the casino. What crap. I have no respect for this man.

Some of us were in the dark, far too long.

Did you ask about the casino?

I’ve made up my mind. If Spanberger doesn’t veto this bill, I’ll vote against the redistricting amendment on April 21st. She can then thank sleazy Scott Surovell when the Democrats don’t get their way in Congress.

Who, exactly, wants this casino? Democrats? Because no one I know wants it and I live about ten minutes down the road from Tysons. Why hasn't she vetoed it already?

Same question. Who does want this casino, besides the developers?

That leaves only democrats living in their crap holes. And then crazy stuff starts like in California where they want to tax people for moving away.

How is that the crap holes are some of the most expensive, highest growth areas of the country?

If you want to really visit crap holes, go to rural AR, MS, LA, GA, AL…all massively red, nearly all completely dependent on government handouts, all dirt poor…all literally crap holes.

I mean, have you ever been to Bristol, VA?

DP. Bristol, VA is a lovely small town. Not sure what you're nattering about.

Getting a casino will put Tysons on the map as an entertainment destination and give both Fairfax County and the Commonweath a great source of revenue. I don't understand why people are so prudish on gambling. Sure, it's not my thing, but why push people to Maryland, when we can capture that business in Virginia? Same goes for legal Marijuana sales. It's safer if buyers score their weed in Virginia versus spending more time on the road driving to Maryland to get their high.

Any revenue generated by the casino will be deducted from the funding sent from the state. There will not be any net increase in funding, particularly for schools.

This project is now being framed as an entertainment district. If it's an entertainment district, what non-entertainment businesses will want to stay there? They say the casino will be just one floor of a larger hotel project. Ha! The only thing better than this would be to put a data center in the middle of all this.

Nattering ... such an underused word.

Ah , there it is.

Plans for the site include a luxury hotel, a convention center, a concert hall, and workforce housing.

I knew someone drag out the old workforce housing trope. I mentioned it earlier in the casino threads. I see the unions are allegedly pushing for this, but unions aren't required by the legislation anymore. Wonder what they were promised because Comstock isn't going to hire union laborers. Is Spanberger promising to kill right to work?

Every study done has shown that casinos in areas like Tysons do not increase local crime.

"Overall, casinos do not have any systematic effect on crime, with the possible exception of larceny, liquor violations, and prostitution; however, when analyzing crime rates adjusted for the population at risk, even these crimes are not statistically different between the casino and control communities.

So I do not understand why people are so opposed to it? I would love to have one here just for some weekend fun once in awhile.

The analysis yielded few consistent findings across the test and control communities. Crime rates increased significantly in some casino communities, some remained relatively stable, and others decreased. The authors conclude that crime does not inevitably increase with the introduction of a casino into a community, but that the effects of casinos on crime appear to be related to a variety of variables which are only poorly understood.

Go live by a casino and tell me crime doesn’t go up. As someone who used to work with studies and data, they can all be cherry picked to the narrative you want. In reality, casinos have a lot of problems and were designed to lift up depressed areas, the trade off was crime and increased costs for that area. That may have been a good trade off if they area wasn’t doing well, but Tysons? You can show me any study you want, in 5-10 years this casino will be very problematic for not only Tysons but NoVa. But then the developers and unions are happy because they got their money. Now NoVa will be stuck with the problem. For anyone dependent on the financial spoils that the casino will bring in, you are wrong. Just watch and see how Richmond will give nova less money out of the total pot and we will have higher expenses to support this casino for the benefit of said Marylanders. For anyone supporting this bill they either need to take their blinders off or ask comstock to up their money to buy you off. It’s going to ruin a lot of people who support it.
