So why was the other son spared?

You really need to go listen to the Murdaugh Murders podcast. It goes into quite a bit of history and detail. Likely, Paul was killed because he wasn't supposed to be at the house (his friend's had a dog at their kennel and the son decided to last minute check in on the dog as a favor). There is ample evidence that Alex lured his wife to Mozelle (the house where she was murdered), and killed her while trying to set up an alibi that he was with his ailing parents. Paul likely arrived to check on the dog and either caught his dad in the act or soon after. Paul also was the driver of the boat that killed Mallory Beach.

It's really worth it to go back and listen to the entire podcast, you will see the web he's been weaving for years, how they were likely broke (Maggie bounced a check to a charity a month or so before she died...). After listening to the f'ed up things he did to so many people it's not at all surprising that he's going to be charged (the podcast talks about how he had "high velocity" blood spatter that could only come from close range to the actual shooting (think blood mist vs blood splatter).

Is it really verbose? I find podcasts like to really.drag.it.out. and make what should have been 4 episodes into 8.

Well a lot of the news has been real time (when they aired). So much info has come out since last year (for example Mandy the podcaster, was one of the reasons the Saterfield/housekeeper I’m sure that’s not correct spelling) family got a lawyer to find out about the money laundering. I can’t remember what episode it was about the details at moselle/shooting. Want to say In the last few months. They (podcast) FOIA a ton so they have the 911 call, they have his jail house calls, etc etc. She’s really giving sunlight to something that could have easily been never found out.
It’s a bananas ride with the podcast.

But yes back to my original comment there is a strong possibility that the son was only killed because he was a witness. The podcast talks about how the marriage seemed fine but that the wife had been living separately from Alex for months at their beach house. And that she was likely realizing that they were in massive debt. What’s not clear is where was all the money going. He was robbing his clients for millions and they were so broke. It’s also wild how the local police have been involved and what role they might have played in trying to cover it up.

So the guy was indicted today in the murder of his wife and son.

based on the news, there is a "mountain of evidence" against him, including splattered blood on his shirt, which indicates he was close to at least one of the victims when he/she was shot, and a video on his son's cellphone with audio of murdaugh arguing with his wife right before she was killed, at a time Murdaugh had said he was with his father.

If this evidence exists, i wonder why it took so long for him to be investigated and indicted. this guy did appalling things (including death of house keeper and the steal of the insurance money, trying to cover up the accident his son caused by silencing witnesses and trying to shift blame on another kid) but he got away with eveyrthing until the mountain of s$it was just to high (probably embezzling millions from his attorney partners was not cool). also the story of the teenager who died a few years ago and the mother kept saying it was not an accident and she thought the Murdaugh kids were involved but she was ignored. I wonder how much s$it this family got away for decades while controlling prosecution in that area and while sentencing poor or minorities to prison for small things. disgusting is the system and the people who helped them

How terrible all this is for the older son (assuming rumors that he was involved in that young man’s death are false. If they’re true I hope it’s possible to prove it.)

Hope he gets a long sentence (if he is guilty).

A long sentence? If ever a case cries out for the death penalty, this one is it.

Maybe? I don't believe ANYTHING his lawyers have been saying. They might have said opioids for sympathy. He was overweight, he does not look like a 10 year opioid addict. He might have said that for sympathy reasons (also to try to reduce his sentence as a drug addict vs just an evil dude).

I think he spent the money on high end hookers, and maybe a love child or 3.

I think just their lifestyle and properties plus a drug habit could have easily spent the money.

This “South Carolina” sounds like a wretched place!

I have no idea what someone would willingly live in such an atrocious state.

I’m generally against the death penalty, but sc does allow the inmate to choose the method. He’s such a coward, I bet he will kill himself (or have someone else do it) in jail.
