NP. I'm from SC and know a ton of people like this family. This kid thought he was untouchable. I'm not saying he deserved to be killed, but I am saying that justice wasn't coming his way through any legal means.

I’m from Charleston. There are tons of people like this in SC - white, wealthy, well-connected, and act like they’re above the law because of their family name and wretched privilege. Not surprising at all.

Can't say their I blame them, they knew the rich people would never be held accountable in SC.

This is what I’m going with. My family lives on SC, and has said it’s not on the local news down there. Can’t wait to see the Dateline.

There are plenty of families like that in the Northern states too.

Like Ted Kennedy and Chappaquidick.

You mean all of the Kennedys.

How is it pronounced? Like Murdock? Or Mur-deaux? Or Mur-daw?
Anonymous
Murdock.

Dad Alex is pronounced Elec.

Irish.

I'm an SC native and most of the population there has had no access to anything resembling a fair justice system (including fair banking, property rights, etc) for most of its history, and many would make credible arguments that they still don't. It's part of America but totally out of compliance with the Constitution for much more time than not. Unfairness and oppression are its defining characteristic. Notions of southern "grace" or "honor" are the kabuki on top of systemic, state-sponsored violent terror. Driving to the beach through that part of the country gives me the heebeejeebees, and I'm white.

Yes! Still bad!

This would have been perfect for the late Dominic Dunne’s Power, Privilege and Justice.

I really want someone to use this plot to write an awesome fiction novel.

NC native and same. But truly I think the people who fall all over themselves to come to the South’s defense against the meanie yankee liberals are all actually okay with that because they are (or think they are) the beneficiaries of the situation and deep down they don’t see anything wrong with it.

I think it was the dad. It's almost always the husband.

Kabuki is a spot-on description.

I’m in North Carolina and “prominent” families that “rule” an area and are full of various alcoholism-linked old money horrors (it’s usually rape rather than multiple deaths but hey) like this are real, but of course not limited to the South whatsoever.
