This Is Us, Season 4

No, it's not. My Dad was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment a year ago, in his mid-sixties. This week his neurologist has told us its' moved to the moderate stages, is progressing quickly, and to start lining up memory care. A year ago he recognized my mother. Now he thinks my Mom has left him, and when he sees her around the house, in his mind, she is his hired caregiver. He gets upset that they are sleeping in the same bed and puts pillows down the middle of their bed so he doesn't accidentally cuddle up with her at night. So yes, dementia can progress fairly fast. What the series is depicting hits very close to home for me- the early signs like the agitation over losing the phone, the constant picture taking, forgetting minor details, the kids picking up on it, and when confronted about it, the parents being defensive and in denial. All pretty accurate.

Same poster- Mean to say, yes, Rebecca's dementia is progressing rapidly, but its quite possible.

Anyone else pick up on the fact that Kate went to the retreat for parents with blind children that she got Toby for his birthday by herself? When Kevin got to their apartment, Madison said Kate and Jack were at a retreat and Toby was at work. That's awful.

Oops, thought the episode was over and it kept going. It was clear at the end! Still sad and awful.

I disagree. He said himself that he wasn't ready to be a good partner before, but he was now. He's come such a long way. His second failed attempt with her was really just final rock bottom of his whole life's struggle. He's so much better now, and has dealt with his issues in a really honest way. He's found peace with his mom and her favoritism toward Randall and peace with his dad's death by going to Vietnam and building a relationship with Nicky. His healing wasn't just a rehab quickie but quite a journey of discovery and hard work.

I, too, think Madison was just a red herring. This show loves to do stuff like that.

I'm looking forward to next episode. I like when they take three episodes, each devoted to the same period of time seen through the experience of each triplet. I watched the promo for next week, and it shows Kate abandoned on the side of a road in rural wooded area like surrounds their cabin. Before the promo, I was expecting him to hit her or something, so being left on the road would be less dramatic than I thought.

He has come a long way---I just think it's too much for one person (Sophie). His healing doesn't take away from the fact that he cheated on her once, and then they got back together and he screwed up royally. But as she said "you always get what you want"

I didn't notice that. Good catch.

Yeah I noticed it

I’m continually amazed by how much Kevin touches me. He is really such an excellent actor; when the show first started, I was sure he’d be the weak link. How wrong I was.

Clearly, Kevin and Sophie should be together.

It continues to be a travesty that Justin Hartley hasn’t been nominated for an Emmy award.

We don’t know what happened before he left her there or after? Maybe she just told him that she was pregnant.

I don't think so. We heard Kate on the phone with Mark saying "what did I do???" as she walked out of the room where Rebecca and Kevin and Sophie were standing near Randall's "undies." So, we know that Mark is mad at her for something and she doesn't know what he's mad about. Don't think a pregnancy would be it.

I still think the Sophie thing is too obvious and Kevin meets someone when he goes back to the cabin -- like someone who works/lives in the area.

I think it’s clear Mark has anger issues. He’s always mad at Kate, as we see from her phone conversations (“What did I do??”). I’m guess he flies into a rage and dumps her on the road - probably due to something innocuous. That’s the pattern of the abuser. Maybe she told him she was pregnant, but I don’t think so. He screamed some at her, but I couldn’t make it out - was it about her “face”? Or her weight? I guess we’ll find out next week.

And I do think Kevin and Sophie wind up together. How could they not?!

PP again - I love how the writers play with time. The whole inside joke about “Good Will Hunting,” for example.

I interpret it as: The scene in the cabin, "we're not talking," is one year ahead, and her dementia has progressed some, but not terribly.

Then she dies a good 10 years later, when she has white hair, Tess is an adult, and Randall and Beth and Toby and Kate may or may not be together.
