Also just thinking about that scene in the cabin-- If it takes place just one year in the future, her dementia is progressing pretty darn fast, isn't it?
No, it's not. My Dad was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment a year ago, in his mid-sixties. This week his neurologist has told us its' moved to the moderate stages, is progressing quickly, and to start lining up memory care. A year ago he recognized my mother. Now he thinks my Mom has left him, and when he sees her around the house, in his mind, she is his hired caregiver. He gets upset that they are sleeping in the same bed and puts pillows down the middle of their bed so he doesn't accidentally cuddle up with her at night. So yes, dementia can progress fairly fast. What the series is depicting hits very close to home for me- the early signs like the agitation over losing the phone, the constant picture taking, forgetting minor details, the kids picking up on it, and when confronted about it, the parents being defensive and in denial. All pretty accurate.
