Lochte Robbery Story: True or False

The thing that's got me was the part in the video where they're all getting out of the taxi with their wallets out. No thanks.

The thing that got me was the 3 minutes that was edited out.
That is evidently the part where the “security guards” pull a gun on the swimmers.
Corruption? Nah...........

You see Sparky, American laws and culture only apply in America.

No shit. You're validating the point that Brazil is corrupt.

You just are not a smart person.

Not PP, but why does anyone think just insulting someone's intelligence (by itself without providing any further substantive comment) is worthwhile or interesting?

Standard response when poster has no actual evidence or response.

You all should probably head back on over to FOX NEWS, Greta's lonely.

Are you under some looney impression that the only people who think the Brazilian police force is corrupt are Republicans?

Except this time there's video proof showing the swimmers with their hands up, and handing over money.

Exactly this time it's true yet everyone for some crazy reason is not believing them even though the video shows what happened. I don't understand how people think he is lying. The video proves he was robbed at gunpoint

See? How hard was that? Even though your comments continue to be neither relevant nor insightful, at least this time it was arguably slightly clever. Thanks for putting in a little more effort

I've been trying to figure out why the story changed so much, but when I watch the video it's pretty clear that they're wasted and probably can't remember exactly what happened. Then there are the reports of camera footage of them returning to their residence seemingly unfazed. I've been mugged and can recall how I was relieved I was that the whole thing was over. I think they were drunk and may or may not have done something worthy of penalty. People who observed their state (in the video, there were several men standing around watching them as they went into the restroom and came out) saw an opportunity and took it. The swimmers couldn't remember what they'd done, couldn't process what was happening, felt ashamed then relieved to be out of there. The story got muddled in the retelling.

I'm sure Brazilian police see this happening all the time, but this time it was in international press and they had to save face. Except now they've made the situation a hundred times worse than it needed to be. The people they're accusing had left the country or were about to, without pressing charges.

Huh? Why would you think that? Rio has obviously been a corrupt shithole for years now. This is just an example. I had no plans to go there and will not be making any soon.

I don't see why two things have to be mutually exclusive.

A) Lochte and friends were destructive assholes.

* and extra stupid for pulling shit in a foreign country, because you run the risk of crossing paths with ...

B) a criminal element that shook them down for money, and the Brazilian authorities which are corrupt and incompetent.

As I've said--Brazil is corrupt. That does not give you the right to lie about such a serious incident (armed robbery!) and broadcast that lie on national TV. He should apologize.

No one is seriously suggesting that Brazil is not crime ridden, that would be absurd.

Actually, we really were talking about going to Rio. Not so much now.

Where is the lie?

Lochte is an American. If you pull a gun on an American and demand they hand over their money, they are likely going to call it robbery. They will believe themselves to be telling the truth.
