if she took a banned substance - rules are rules. Especially recreational drugs - that was her choice.

If it turns out to be something as stupid as a cold medication or something in her makeup, then I think THAT would be unfortunate.

I read elsewhere the banned substance is trimetazidine, a “micro dose”, whatever that means, from a December sample. Similar uses to melodium.

Considering she’s only 15, I wouldn't jump to conclusions that she was complicit in this. But considering the other two Russian competitors have the same coach/doctor, i imagine they will be under suspicion too.

After her long program earlier this week, I thought she looked unusually winded. Not that slaters often don’t look out of breath after programs but for some reason hers was more noticeable. Her program is unprecedented for female skaters.

The fact that she competes for the ROC rather than Russia is enough to not give the benefit of the doubt to her or any other Russian athlete

anyone in olympic contention should not be given/take a banned substance. If it was the fault of her doctors and/or coach, then they suck and I feel for her to be screwed by them.

If it is weed like others have noted, that is on HER.

I blame whoever was responsible for her doping for being sloppy

I think Shiffrin is definitely in the middle of a mental meltdown. She was so hyped, so built up. She obviously is a very accomplished skiier with other olympic medals. But something went wrong and now she can't get out of her head, and it unfortunately happened at the olympics.

It happens all the time. In my sport (Equestrian) FEI horses are kept in separate barns and you have to be incredibly careful about everything that touches them. There are no excuses even if you didn’t administer the drug. Even if it wasn’t your fault, your medal is removed if the horse tests positive for a banned substance.

Unfortunately this is necessary because of some bad actors in sports. Same is true for all athletes, especially those from exploitative countries.

I think Zhu Yi’s dad is a spy. He returned to Chine to work in artificial intelligence.

I don’t like Gu. Just answer the question about your nationality. I can’t believe women are being told they can’t ski due to their body suits but Gu can ski for China even when she might not be Chinese.

I find her very intimidating. She answered those questions like a seasoned politician. There is something off about a teen that is that polished and slick. An adult in a teen body.

That is the work of her tiger mother. Her mom controls all media, asks to review articles, controls all access to her daughter. Her mom is also notorious for all her scary demands.

What kind of demands?

Where are you guys seeing weed? This is the only place I’ve seen weed mentioned.

It doesn’t surprise me that Russia is still trying to dope its athletes, but when it comes to a skater like Valieva, why?? She’s so above everyone else already, why would they risk her career like that. What performance enhancing drugs are even successful for a sport like figure skating?

What I saw online was that it has something to do with more efficiently using oxygen? So I guess in theory it would improve stamina.

The fact is that even the system treats athletes under 16 differently than adults. Obviously we don’t know the whole story yet but a 15yo should be able to depend on the trusted adults in their life and not be constantly suspicious they are being fed illegal substances.

The story has been evolving. Initial rumors on Twitter was that some of the Russian skaters tested positive for weed, but more information has trickled out since then. Now we know it was Kamila Velieva with Trimetazidine.

People have pointed out how winded she looked after her FS, since she's probably discontinued the PED during this competition.

I agree, and I feel for her. She’s struggled the last couple years both personally and health wise and all the pressure on top of that may be too much. I’ll be surprised if competes in all the speed events.

If she does choose to, I sincerely hope she receives praise and accolades regardless of where she finishes.

How many of these countries are able to maintain or have a use for all the facilities they build after the games are done? Look at Brazil; the people are living in poverty yet the govt had enough to build these facilities that were never used after the games and now sit to waste away. What's the point?

Why do you care what another nation does? There is nothing you can do to stop other countries from hosting.
I assume you are STRONGLY against the upcoming Summer Olympiad in LA?

DP, but why? LA is exactly the kind of city that should host. They already have most of the infrastructure.

DP and yeah, I think LA would be a good host in a small group of rotating host cities for the summer Olympics. I’m not sure Greece would want to host every four years unless the IOC ponied up most of the money.

All participating nations could contribute. Then some portion of the proceeds could be distributed to participating nations as well. Everybody wins.
