Couldn't care less. I'm disgusted it's in China.

NBC is trying to add some context instead of just ignoring it. Something along the lines of “China doesn’t care about what western countries think of it.” Which is interesting considering most western countries have a terrible history of atrocities (oh, but we’re cool now). Not all western countries, but most. Also, how China is viewed by western counties vs, other emerging nations.

Anyway, that aside, I delight in complicated fireworks set to frisson-inducing music.

Agree. I can’t believe this is allowed. Especially with what they did regarding covid.

Shouldn't this be in Sports?

I thought it started tonight. Lol.

You know these Olympics were planned well before Covid, right?

China is 12 hours behind us. So it's happening now but airing tonight.

And right on cue, the NBC coverage is atrocious.

They showed maybe 15 minutes of the downhill moguls qualifying and then switched over to a fireside chat. Showed a bit of the men's figure skating and then back to more chatting.

Is the Peacock coverage as terrible? I've heard Peacock in general is terrible, ha.

Same. I won’t watch it. It’s just not what it used to be anyway.

China can go atrocity for atrocity with any other nation in the world. By sheer body count, it's probably between them and the British depending on how far back you want to go. The difference is that most western countries have tone it down recently

ahead of us, but same result. It's nice to actually see some stuff live (or live-ish) during primetime.

But yeah, the NBC coverage of the opening ceremony was terrible. They kept cutting to super wide views of detailed things so you couldn't actually see what was being projected. Then close-ups of things that should be wide view. Stop changing camera angles every 30 seconds!! Also, I don't need to see a full screen of a skater's face, I want to see their skating!

Oh--but they showed how diverse and open-minded they are by having people of all different ethnic groups in the opening ceremony.

I wonder how much some of those people had to be coerced to participate. That poor Uyghur athlete who was trotted out so China can pretend that they're not villains.

The US, Britain, China, France, Russia, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Japan.. it’s all a pretty bloody, brutal history. It’s almost like cultural dominance comes with inevitable atrocities throughout human history?

Finland seems cool. Helsinki 2030?!?

WHY can't they just pick a location in the world and STAY?
