NBC is trying to add some context instead of just ignoring it. Something along the lines of “China doesn’t care about what western countries think of it.” Which is interesting considering most western countries have a terrible history of atrocities (oh, but we’re cool now). Not all western countries, but most. Also, how China is viewed by western counties vs, other emerging nations.

Anyway, that aside, I delight in complicated fireworks set to frisson-inducing music.

China can go atrocity for atrocity with any other nation in the world. By sheer body count, it's probably between them and the British depending on how far back you want to go. The difference is that most western countries have tone it down recently

Oh--but they showed how diverse and open-minded they are by having people of all different ethnic groups in the opening ceremony.

I wonder how much some of those people had to be coerced to participate. That poor Uyghur athlete who was trotted out so China can pretend that they're not villains.

https://uhrp.org/donate/ It’s not about history, it’s about the present and China unleashed Covid, are performing genocide actively today, and are threatening Taiwan and ruining Hong Kong. I’m not watching.

You have to have the paid version of Peacock, which was not true during the Summer Olympics

so annoying

I really like to watch the ENTIRE figure skating competition and not just the americans and/or top performers

During the 1994 games (yes, YEARS ago), they actually showed quite a few more of the performers for some reason. They showed this one girl who could spin faster than anyone else from the Netherlands or something? It sticks with me because you very rarely see the OTHER competitors if they aren't in the medal hunt.

I was getting the Olympic Channel or something during Sochi and was able to watch all the ice skating in real time and I just loved the people who probably weren't going to get a medal, but were so damn happy just to be there. I also think that was where Johnny and Tara started and I never thought I would love them as commentators, but dammit if they aren't amazing at this. They actually explain things really well (particularly Johnny)

I basically only watch the Olympics for the gymnastics in summer and ice skating in winter - I have always been this way. I am not going to NOT watch just because of the country hosting.

Me too. Not watching. Do hope Nathan Chen wins Gold though, he is a lovely skater and so fun to watch!

I miss the Olympics if my youth- when the Communist countries were the villains to root against, it was all east vs. west.

There was a lot more at stake before they started allowing professionals to compete. It meant you only got one, maybe two bites at the Olympic apple before you had to turn pro. It made figure skating a lot more dramatic.

I'm watching the rebroadcast of the opening ceremony now and the speech by the IOC president, this is what the Olympics are about. Not about boycotts. About coming together. Give peace a chance.

Sounds like a Chinese national singing John Lennon. Anyone know who it is?knoweo

The performance on the ice along with the graphics was lovely.

The US, Britain, China, France, Russia, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Japan.. it’s all a pretty bloody, brutal history. It’s almost like cultural dominance comes with inevitable atrocities throughout human history?

Finland seems cool. Helsinki 2030?!?

Finnish troops committed atrocities against Jews during WWII.

Nathalie Krieg of Switzerland. Switzerland used to always turn out great spinners.

They showed maybe 15 minutes of the downhill moguls qualifying and then switched over to a fireside chat. Showed a bit of the men's figure skating and then back to more chatting.

Is the Peacock coverage as terrible? I've heard Peacock in general is terrible, ha.

I was hoping there would be less of this since the NBC commentators aren’t even there. Sigh.

I pink puffy heart you, figure skating nerd.

No one else in my house is into it like I am. That bums me out a bit. My mom and I used to watch together.

NBC showed all the Team Event skaters. There were only 10 entries per discipline, and they cut to other events while the ice was being zamboni’d and during warmups. USA network will be carrying the full event like NBC sports network used to, but keep in mind, due to the time zones, the event is happening live between 9PM and 1AM, so they’ll flip flop between NBC and USA for headliners (like with Pyeongchang.) I loved the Sochi mid-day coverage too. Especially since it happened during some weather event, and I was working from home. It was great watching the whole event uninterrupted, and then catching the highlights again in prime time.

So looking forward to the ladies skating event for the Russian girls. They developed a fabulous talent pipeline over the last ten years. That’s what happens when you don’t need to worry about ice time!

I know that just like Tokyo, the opening and closing ceremonies have to be more scaled back with very few performers than they normally would. But I miss it. The computer-based graphics and effects are very cool, but doesn't replace the power of having hundreds of performers do it. Hopefully we can get back to that in the next Olympics.

Also, what is with such pitiful Olympic torches lately? The torch used to be massive and high in the Olympic stadium. During coverage, they'd pan over to it. In the last few Olympics, they are either hidden, or very small, or both. Is it not green to have a big torch anymore?
