And Russia waited until the Olympics were over before they invaded Ukraine. Those two countries are BFFs and that's what makes this so scary. |

Yah. Unbelievably cruel and callous. China is also benefitting from the invasion as their yuan currency has gone up with the decline of the Russian Ruble. Feb 18 they released a joint statement endorsing Russia’s position on NATO expansion and partnered with Russia in dedollarization, which Russia pushed after sanctions against it for illegally annexing Crimea in 2014. While 80 % of Russian exports were in US dollar in 2013, today only half are. Most of the decrease was absorbed by its trade with China. Ironically, China Russian trade has been stifled by yuan’s surge against the ruble. So it is a lot more expensive for Russians to do business with the Chinese as well. China is so cynical though - they have not supported Ukraine at all in preventing this monstrous invasion, and refuses to sanction Russia. But they can see the way the world winds are blowing and are holding talks with Ukraine thus edging away from Russia. I think they deserve sanctions as well. They have so much blood on their hands for not warning Ukraine and the world about Putin’s intent in invading straight after the Olympics. |

I don't think we were saying, "let's ask putin to just postpone until after the games end". And not mentioning the ugly request to anyone. Pollutes theses games even more than they were already tainted. All the athletes should find a way to respond. |

Of all the outrageous things going on right now, this doesn't really move me. We knew the invasion was coming. We know China is a bad actor. It's tradition to stop wars during the Olympics.
I just don't see how this qualifies as news. |

This is not really true. Many security experts and Ukrainians themselves thought it was just posturing. Putin himself claimed it was just military exercises. Biden administration wanted to be prudent but they really did not know for sure whether Russia would invade - and certainly no one thought they would invade all the key cities in the entire country. The only authorities who knew for sure were China. This is news and this is off the carts inexcusable. Both Russia and China deserve sanctions and to be kicked off the UN Security Council. Russia and Belarus are banned from the ParaOlympics but Russia should be banned from all Olympics. This is the second time they have invaded another sovereign country in an unprovoked act of war during the Olympics (this time they built up all the troops along the border during the Olympics and invaded straight afterwards). They also condone doping teenagers and other athletes. However, this thread now belongs in politics so sorry to anyone just wanting to read about entertainment and pop culture. |
