2022 Olympics

Does anyone care about the winter Olympics? They don't even send all of the coutnries in the world because of climate restrictions.

Hockey is the only sport that is interesting, yet countries can't even use their best players anymore. It is a boring amateur fest of hockey.

I agree that the Russian dolls are doing some incredible things ( the quads! The overhead arms! The artistry!) but you gotta know there’s a huge dark side to their current domination. The way they are going through these girls so quickly, only to have them retire as depressed eating disordered young women when their bodies start to mature in their later teens.

It reminds me of how dominant the American gymnastics program has been for the last 10 years or so, only to be hiding rampant emotional and sexual abuse just underneath the surface.

Ice skating has always had a dark side, as has gymnastics.

Under the Russian and Chinese systems, children are basically taken from their families early to be used for the glory of the system. And yes, they are putting a ton of stress on these young girls. It might be amazing the stunts they can do, but they are being chewed up and spit out.

I understand why the point system was revamped (and I may just pay peacock $5 to finish that documentary about the 2002 scandal) but it takes a lot of the joy out of skating when you are just trying to squeeze in as many points as possible. (Same can be said of gymnastics, actually-I miss the gymnastics of the 80s and 90s)

So much is given up in the pursuit of glory for the homeland.

Yup.

Hell, even basketball in China does too. Many people don't know that Yao was the product of a forced govt marriage between two people that were told by the state to produce a kid because the govt thought the parents had the right genetics to produce a viable basketball playing offspring. People really do not understand that these kinds of states love to try to project soft power through sports victories. They have to intervene to try to win.
