They work hard, get good grades, have a tight knit community, are good at soccer, go to college.

Some do well, some do not. Many drop out because they get frustrated with the classes they have to take to graduate. Many don't "get" school - they have not been exposed to it much and the rules and structure are difficult when you arrive at age 17. Many of these kids (especially the boys) have been allowed to do whatever they want in their home countries and the rules are hard. This is not all of them, but for those coming from Central America, it's fairly common. In general, the girls definitely do better academically than the boys.

This. If the county is going to welcome illegal immigrants then we need to address this issue in our schools.

It's not just undocumented individuals. It's the Code of Conduct that destroyed the schools. If there are any lawyers reading, examine the manual - http://archives.marylandpublicschools.org/MSDE/divisions/studentschoolsvcs/student_services_alt/docs/MDGuidelinesforStateCodeDiscipline_08072014.pdf - and note the wording.

It's far too convoluted and far too gray to make much sense of it.

We cannot get rid of dangerous kids. That's the bottom line, and this is why the system will implode soon unless people demand change.

It's pretty sick. If my 14 year old daughter told me there was a 19 year old in her class of any color I would do something about it. Rape is rape and this one would not have happened if the US did there job and stop coddling criminals.

"You would do something about it." How? The county has decided, for better or worse, to allow kids up to 21, or nearly 22 depending on bday and time of year. And they have decided to put them in regular classes, although often in lower grades given lack of English and/or formal education generally. If you call the school and said you don't want a 19 year old man in her class, they would tell you to take a leap and that the man has every right to be there.

How? I would pull my daughter out and place her in private. I will publicize the ridiculousness of the situation. We are sitting here on DCUM complaining but has anyone shared this story on their social channels? Write letters to decision makers? I did last night and won't stop. This incident has angered me that much I will do what I can to draw attention lest MC sweeps it under the rug.

Good. Get your community associations and PTAs involved too. Numbers impress MoCo officials.

We had gang fights weekly at my former HS. They often happened by my room, as it connected our wing to ESOL. Those who had "established" themselves by pissing on their territory resented anyone new coming into town. So the gang warfare that started in the 'hood continued in the school.

fun times

During that time, my daughter was in private b/c we lived in the area.

We've since moved, and she's in public. so far so good - But once the schools can no longer handle a growing population of challenging kids b/c the state prevents us from disciplining kids, both of my kids will go to private.

I will teach in the roughest schools, but i will not use my kids as guinea pigs to prove any point.

This is the shocking thing - the number of Public school teachers sending their own kids to private. I was thinking of moving to Rockville - so much for that.

I hope this case gets more publicity and makes the national news cycle.

MCPS is a huge school district. This deserves more attention since that will be the only thing that leads to change.

Any idea how to get it more publicized?

Put it on social, call a protest... it will make national news.

How ages are verified, I don't know. Now, does anyone over 18 need to be taught in a regular high school or can/should their right to an education be met in an alternative environment?

I posted this above. This is only for ESOL students. We have gotten so many older students this year with little to know education in their countries - it is next to impossible that they can graduate in 4 years. It's an issue we ESOL teachers have talked about for years.
.
MCPS website states that anyone under 19th birthday can register as a student. If the student starts 9th grade when s/he is one day before their 19th birthday, they will graduate from HS at almost 23! Why dont MCPS put them in an alternative program, teach them basic langsuge skill, trach them the law in the US, and may make them into productive adults?

At the taxpayer's expense? These people don't belong here if they have not come through the proper and legal way. I agree that of course they don't belong in schools. However, coming up with ways to accommodate ILLEGAL immigrants is not the answer. They should be forced to prove legal status and ICE called in if they cannot prove they are here legally. This crime is shining a spotlight on what will continue to happen if we continue to accommodate illegals with no penalties for being here. When will our government decide to protect it's own citizens first? Shame on all jurisdictions who continue to aid and abed people here ILLEGALLY!

No, the county spends way more money on ESOL than gifted education, mortgage tax breaks for elderly residents, sports, recreation, etc. It does make sense to educate immigrants and to have ESOL of course, but not when it is illegal immigration. And sadly Trump is just beefing up defense. We need a policy somewhere between far right & far left ideology.

We decided against it for now because houses zoned for W schools in our measly price range of $650K are smaller and need a lot of work compared to our current house. But now I'm thinking, if an 18 year old with an alien removal order can register for 9th grade at RHS, why doesn't the county let me register my kids for Wooton even though I'm not zoned for it? The academic performance and peer environment at RHS don't meet our kids needs. Don't you think the county would sympathize with us?

Are you joking? No they would not sympathize with you. Even if you had doctors reports showing your child was anxious because of the environment, they would not do anything. Maybe some kind official would suggest you enroll in Catholic school. And then you would be financially stressed with tuition. BTDT

Rockville HS is loaded with illegals-thy is why there will forever be issues like this rape, among other things. You want a sanctuary city or a decent school? Cannot have both!

The parents of the rape victim should sue the school and county for harboring illegal aliens, which caused harm to their daughter!

That is not true. They reprint the police reports.

yes

I've taught kids in grade 9 as old as 19, maybe 20. One threatened to shoot me dead years ago. The kids translated for me. He was out the next day, but that was back in the day when principals had say over their schools.

This isn't the case now. It's all been downhill for years. And it's absolutely disgusting what's allowed to go on in schools.

I am so sorry, teacher. Around what year did it start going downhill and why? Is it because of the MD state law someone referenced unthread?

This is what a lynch mob looks like.

Everyone here has 1) assumed they are guilty; 2) assumed they are illegal; and 3) assumed that they committed a criminal act because undocumented people are more likely to be criminals. None of these three points has been proven. If they were white, no one would be blaming their culture or assuming guilt.

Already in NY Daily News, US News & World Report, Daily Mail, Wash Post. I wish The Atlantic and NYTimes would cover this!
