AGREED!
My 5th grader has an almost 14 year old in hr class & she's 11!

There's something definitely wrong with a school system that allows that kind of craziness.

Where is this happening? Crazy! Write your Councilmembers too - BoE may not do much.

Ick. Those aren't the ones to cover this.

It's sad that a girl had to be raped before people woke up to the dangers of unchecked illegal immigration.

I definitely understand your concerns, and I don't think it makes sense to register 18 year olds as freshmen unless it's at an alternative campus for older than traditional students. If I understand the policy correctly, all students older than 21 must finish their high school education at another campus, and an 18 year old would turn 21 by the time they were in their senior year if they started as a Freshman so why not start them at the school they'll end up at anyway?

However, regarding kids on class with older students, in high school that happens even if everyone is in the grade typical for their chronological age since most elective classes are open to grades 9-12 or 10-12. I don't think it's that unusual for a 14/15 year old sophomore to be in at least a few classes with seniors, who are likely somewhere between 17 and 19.

There was an alternative campus. Patricia O'Neill, Judy Docca, Rebecca Smondrowski and Jill Ortman-Fouse shut it down. They closed the alternative campus so that now students awaiting trial or convicted of crimes attend the same school with their victims.

What school was this? Why was it closed? It seems an alternative/holding school for anyone MS age and above would be a reasonable option.

My guess is the county sold the land or something and it is now being developed into high rise condos/mixed use development because that seems to be what is happening everywhere in an already overcrowded and overtaxed county.

Alternative Programs still exists. It's off Avery Road close to 28. It was once Twain, which focused on ED. Alt, however, is for level 2 and 3 kids. It's not meant to house criminals and rapists. The kids are already tough enough and some, in fact, are downright scary. But rapists? not yet . . .

You don't "educate" rapists with kids who were kicked out for some nasty fighting
.

YOU DO IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY BECAUSE THE ALTERNATIVE PROGRAM FOR THESE STUDENTS WAS CLOSED BY PATRICIA O'NEILL AND JILL ORTMAN-FOUSE THE PROGRESSIVES

ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS WAS NOT ONE PLACE. THERE WERE A SERIES OF PROGRAMS FOR DIFFERENT ISSUES. CRIMINALS, DROP OUTS, ED ISSUES. THOSE ARE NOT ALL THE SAME PROGRAM. PATRICIA O'NEILL AND JILL ORTMAN-FOUSE CLOSED THOSE OTHER PROGRAMS AND HAVE NOT OPENED THEM. INSTEAD THOSE PROGRESSIVES WANT ALL STUDENTS EDUCATED IN THE SAME BUILDING. CRIMINALS NOW GO TO COURT, GET SENTENCED AND RETURN TO MCPS CLASSROOMS AFTER RELEASE. WAKE UP PARENTS.

Really? I voted for Jill Ourtman Fouse and campaigned for her. She's not communicated well since her election, but I find it hard to believe she didn't do this for good reason.

Rockville City, and Montgomery County, are NOT sanctuary jurisdictions. That was pointed out earlier in this thread (ok, I know it's long) with an article where Leggett himself (county exec) stated that.

I just did. What's astounding to me, is that MCPS, nor the BoE, nor the Council, nor the County Exec, has made a statement. I don't care about the illegal immigrant thing so much as I care about the safety of students in MCPS. This happened Thursday morning, so they had all day to come out with a statement and instead... nothing.

Everyone here has 1) assumed they are guilty; 2) assumed they are illegal; and 3) assumed that they committed a criminal act because undocumented people are more likely to be criminals. None of these three points has been proven. If they were white, no one would be blaming their culture or assuming guilt.

Did you read all the articles? Did you see the police report? Did you hear the judge say the attached was a flight risk?

This is not about 'not being white'. You are projecting your own prejudice here.

That may be true but it is well known among the illegal immigrant community that certain parts of the country are more welcoming to illegal immigrants than others (think CASA de Maryland). I work in healthcare and see many recently arrived immigrants (legal and illegal). They know where to go and who to go see to get the resources they need - schools, healthcare, food, etc.

We were there on Saturday night because my younger kid attends Barnsley and they had their international Night there. I saw that sign proudly displayed at the entrance but it didn't give me any reassurance that I want to send my two daughters there.

We had gang fights weekly at my former HS. They often happened by my room, as it connected our wing to ESOL. Those who had "established" themselves by pissing on their territory resented anyone new coming into town. So the gang warfare that started in the 'hood continued in the school.

fun times

During that time, my daughter was in private b/c we lived in the area.

We've since moved, and she's in public. so far so good - But once the schools can no longer handle a growing population of challenging kids b/c the state prevents us from disciplining kids, both of my kids will go to private.

I will teach in the roughest schools, but i will not use my kids as guinea pigs to prove any point.

This is the shocking thing - the number of Public school teachers sending their own kids to private. I was thinking of moving to Rockville - so much for that.

Another MCPS teacher here, I won't name the school or area, but my children are in private school. But, I cannot afford Potomac, Bethesda or any other $600,000 home. DH and I would rather spend money on experience/education than fancy things (houses, cars. etc.) I absolutely believe that all children deserve a quality education. It's why I am still teaching in MCPS rather than going to private. With that being said, I will NOT allow my children to be a social experiment. MoCo parents have been sheeple (sheep people), I may get a lot of flack for this, and I don't care! The middle class has been led, by the affluent in the county to accept "diversity from poverty stricken places". Yet, these same people buy into the wealthiest areas possible or send their children to private school. Leaving the rest of us to fend for ourselves against the county board and politics. Before you get off on your liberal high horse and gallop off into Liberal Land, I am Black. I appreciate diversity and believe diversity is important, however, as other pp's have said, you can enroll in a public high school as long as you are 19 and under. I have had 18-19 yr old students in the ninth grade. Their parents pay coyotes to help them across the border to come to America for the opportunity. Unfortunately, while their parents are scraping by for opportunities for their children, the children could care less. I have had children from South American countries tell me: "I don't know why I'm here, I miss being in my country and I'm fine with joining a gang."

So what do these children do when they reach MoCo with limited school experience and English? They find people who think like them and join the gangs that they would have joined back in their home country. I don't agree that we should just take the younger children. I believe that would tear many families apart, instead, we need to deport families together and allow them to apply legally to be here as a family, just like my Ethiopian, Somalian, Caribbean, Tawainese and other Asiatic students. Families build strong communities, broken families equal broken communities. No amount of schooling, non-profits, churches or wrap around services can fix that.

The pedophile that is the republican's post boy for we don't hate gays.

This is the best description of him I've ever read.

Take this somewhere else, we are talking about a local issue and safety in our schools. Get out of here.

I'm glad we passed term limits last November on MoCo elected officials. Half of them will be out at next election.

The silence is deafening.

At least a word from the superintendent would be nice. Saying they'll review security measures at all schools. Review school policy of enrolling recent immigrants who do not speak English - an alternative school perhaps?

I was shocked to read that school administrators did their own investigation first BEFORE calling police. There's just so much wrong with that.
Poor girl didn't have her own cell phone apparently?

Really, you're shocked that the school administration did their due diligence before calling the police? Was there an extensive delay before the cops were called or did the admins listen to the girls story and look in the bathroom to see if there was reason to call? It would have irresponsible of them if they didn't.

Not knowing all of the details, it sounds as though the administration handled the situation as best they could.

Actually you are not just wrong, but extremely wrong.

They are required reporters. There does NOT need to be "evidence" ... Principals don't even know what evidence is. Walking into a crime scene actually contaminates the scene.

The procedures call for principals to NOT investigate.

This is why so many pedophiles in moco get away because principals do investigations and tip off the criminal.

Yes, so agree. We have an administrator in our school who thinks she has some special power to talk and get the truth out of kids. She exercises this every time there is a problem and the parents find out about it later. The administrators are teachers, that's it. They need to back off when something like this is reported and that is the law.

This. Let's stop pretending that the correlation between Central American immigrants and the rise of MS-13 here is a mystery. It's not racist, it's a fact, and pretending the issue away will not reduce crime rates. Also, statistically, the victim was likely of minority race and she deserves as much outrage as if this had happened at a W school.

BS … they built in recent years with a million dollars of tax payers money an immigration processing center for illegals to make them citizens faster. This is utter bullshit, in fact Leggett made it clear a couple of years ago when Prince Wililiam County in Virginia cracked down on this and the illegals fled that they were more than welcome in Montgomery County. This is a sanctuary county and Leggett has supported that, so stop lying. And the people crying fowl about what is going on in the schools, you live here and you voted for this. You accept Obama drop shipping this unveiled immigrants into our school because you want to be a good democrat. This is on your hands, look what you have allowed to happen to this young lady and to our schools. Shame on you.

"“Sanctuary jurisdiction has to do with your relationship to ICE,” Lacefield said, “not with what you say.”"

"Lacefield said Thursday the county cooperates with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement by providing the federal department with county arrest and detention information through the state."

"Lacefield noted that true “sanctuary cities” such as San Francisco or Chicago do not respond to ICE inquiries about who is in their jails."
