The thing is, the police were not involved, then, and there's no reason to involve them now. The gas station isn't pressing charges, the swimmers didn't file a police report. Now they are being indicted for... If someone smashed up a restroom, armed guards demand and receive payment, then that's that. Done. No confiscation of passports, charging with false reporting. |

I wish there was audio on the tape so we could hear the part where Lochte screams: "Do You Know Who I Am?" Because you know he did.
Feel sorry for the other swimmers with him to get dragged down by what was surely mostly his assholery. |
American here--It's hilarious how Americans think that they should get to decide what other countries laws are or how they should be construed. Arrogant. |
| I bet Michael Phelps has never been happier that he was back at the hotel changing diapers... |
No, people just aren't a fan of corrupt governments and police. |
Have you seen the statistics about corruption in Rio, much higher than in the rest of Brazil? If Feigen hands over the right amount of money, he'll be on the next flight home. |
The athletes were trying to buy who off? That hasn't been reported at all. |
No, see, here's the thing. You don't get to have vigilante justice AND judicial system justice. At least, not unless you're totally corrupt. Apparently in Brazil, they take care of things vigilante style. Ergo, no reason for the police to now be involved. They had their "consequences." If police want to get involved, then the ROBBERY needs to be dealt with through the judicial system as well. |

They destructed property.
They paid for it (willingly or not) to the satisfaction of the owner. They did not file a police report. So, why the overkill police involvement? The only explanation is that Brazil is embarassed. Who the hell cares if Lochte says he was robbed and he was or wasn't or it was his interpretation? He didn't name a person. It isn't slander. I can say I'm the queen of England and that doesn't make it true, but it doesn't mean my passport should be confiscated either. |
| The security guards. The athletes paid them $50.00 US for the damage they caused. Try to keep up. |
| Well, Lochte and another swimmer (can't remember which one) gave a false statement to police. That's enough in the US to have charges pressed against you. |
Cough, cough. The security guards are remaining anonymous, in fear of retribution (from who, exactly?). Lochte said he paid several hundred dollars, and the police are saying less than $50. I can't imagine where the difference went. |
It's a matter of honor. Yes, Brazil legit has terrible crime. But you don't get to lie about it and trash talk them and say this lie on national TV. If Lochte were a gentleman he would apologize. But he has no honor. No surprise there. |
Uh, then who did they give the $400 to? |
While this is true, this is a pot and kettle situation. The entire country is completely corrupt. |
