How do you know this?

Yeah. I am a Magruder teacher have not heard this. I would not be surprised though. I think he is one of the longest serving principals in MCPS based on his salary.

I have felt that the last few years have felt like transition years. The admin needs a shake-up for several reasons, but staff also don’t want to be micromanaged by a new principal looking to make change just for appearances.

He just announced this week. I don't know anything about the appointment process -- will one of the APs step up as acting for a year?

Yes, probably Sofia Vega-Ormeno (even though she’s about to be a Principal Intern) or John Haas. I don’t think they’ll get someone by 7/1, they’re going to have an interim principal the entire year.

John Haas used to be the principal of SSIMS.

Ah, yes, forgot what school he led. One of those two will be interim.

Why would a former principal need to be an intern?

Interim not intern. Since their principal is leaving and he has led a school, he’s going to be a stand in during this upcoming school year.

It's an acting principal, not an interim. Acting principals function just like regular principals, but they are hired for a defined time period and don't require board approval.

Font too small. Oops. MCPS has plenty of time. There are a lot of candidates who will be able to take the vacancies of the schools who need principals.

Actually I think they have a dearth of interested and qualified applicants. The ones I know in those roles are counting down the days until they can retire.

+1. They took forever to fill the Kennedy principal job. And they still have Paint Branch and Potomac to fill. And they haven't even posted the positions for Magruder or Rock Creek Forest. They'll wait until the spring when more candidates will be job-hunting.

Would middle school principals want the promotion to high school, or are those jobs considered undesirable now given current conditions in high schools?

Anyone heard about the principal at East Silver Spring? He kept continuing his leave while the AP (acting as principal) burned that place down. I am sure more than the 12+ who already quit the school will quit if he announces he's out.

Likely actings will be a bunch of schools next year such as Magruder, Rock Creek Forest, Montgomery Knolls, etc. As well as any principal vacancies that occur from the June 27th Board meeting with appointments.

Lavina Carrillo from Blair will be acting at Rock Creek Forest.

So many principals have taken leave in recent years. For alcoholism, mental health, burnout, you name it. The principals are not okay.

That’s because MCPS doesn’t hire effective people.
Most principals can manage a classroom but they have zero idea of how to manage adults, so they just treat the adults like children. The results are micromanaging (because they feel out of control), belittling their employees, etc. they truly don’t understand their role or position. Unfortunately, toxic admin ruins it for everyone else and mcps can’t seem to hire people who actually understand the assignment.

Do high school principals ever switch to other schools? Is there any chance on the planet Mr. Owusu would switch from Clarksburg to Magruder? (I am sure he's plenty happy where he is, but I could dream....)

The principals you mention are the ones who want to get promoted and move up in central office admin. Most principals are very caring people who are just getting very burnt out. They get blamed by everyone for every little issue in a school.

Lol. Just no. You clearly don't work in a school or you are a principal.

I have worked in three MCPS schools for the last 15 years. You?
