Principal appointments 2023

Anonymous
It appears East Silver Spring will be a train wreck again this year. The principal had been on leave since March, leaving the AP (with only one year experience) as Acting Principal and they pulled a third grade teacher in for acting AP. The result was a bunch of teachers quitting. MCPS has no idea what they are doing. Do they even look at the number of teachers who left? Do they even look at the school climate results to see how poorly she ran the school? Someone from central should have been brought in to at least mentor her.

*Meant to to add, the principal just resigned and they will be having the same situation in place next year.

Central office mentors are a joke. I’ve seen principals put on a good act, including dressing up in a collared shirt and tie, when their CO boss comes to the school. Yet, the very next day the same principal will appear hungover and aloof in team meetings.

I mean, it's better than letting an inexperienced AP run a school with an inexperienced (in admin) teacher as acting AP at their side.

I would not want this and it's not surprising this elementary school is seeing teachers leave.

I thought acting principals had a consulting principal or other experienced leader working with them.

They SHOULD... Maybe they will get her one for this upcoming year, but for the last two quarters of this school year, she did not have one. And again, the acting AP for the last two quarters was a third grade teacher from the school...he will continue with that role this upcoming school year. (He was chosen because he's currently enrolled in an admin degree program) It was a mess.

It seemed like the purpose of the thread was to post appointments. It also seems like MCPS is now just making staff members acting leadership without the board approval. Has this always been the case?

Acting appointments don't go through the BOE, only permanent appointments.

Someone started a thread on vacancies in MCPS and a lot of acting leadership makes me nervous as a staff member. Admin has so much decision making that really school specific issues can jeopardize staff morale. Hopefully these moves don't cause anymore major negative impacts for staff.

It's not unusual to have a bunch of acting principals appointed in the summer. Some of them will apply for and get the permanent positions during the coming year.

He definitely has an I AM KING disposition. Watch out Paint Branch.

In schools like FMS there is an acting principal AND an acting AP

Does one of them know MCPS middle schools start at 8:15? Or are they just going to ignore the blatant "I am King" attitude that was there and start first period at 8:06? With the info coming out focused on this school and the admin, it will be interesting to see what stays around and what goes.

From Farquhar:

7. How positive is the tone that school leaders set for the culture of the school? 40.6%

That's pretty damning.

31/32 responders seems so low. How many have to take this survey?

I didn't see that they provide the number. Only 42% returned. MCPS staff members can be so apathetic.

With all of the bullying, sexual harassment, alcohol and affairs from the administration there is no room for positivity.
