Coronavirus good Uplifting and hopeful news only

According to CDC tracker, nationwide, 60% of the population 65 and over have received at least one dose the vaccine. That surprises me (in a good way). I know there has been great demand, but I thought we would hit a lower ceiling of those wanting the vaccines -- that there would be persistent large portion of the population that is unwilling to get it. That portion is smaller than I thought. And as some people are still seeking appointments, that 60% is sure to grow!

We also have some family in Lousiana and it's like open season down there- not sure if demand is super low or what but tons of open appointments at CVS apparently. Even those that don't qualify yet are able to just go at the end of the day and get a shot because they're just not getting used up. An idea for anyone who is willing to drive.

Tons of vaccines in VA at the borders of TN and NC. Bristol and South Boston.

I'm pretty sure Bristol requires you to either live / work there. Not trying to be a jerk, just trying to save someone a drive.

From Pfizer today. Not only is their vaccine’s real-world numbers holding up to the trials, but the vaccine is also proving to stop asymptomatic transmission as well.

“Furthermore, the analysis found a vaccine effectiveness of 94% against asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections. For all outcomes, vaccine effectiveness was measured from two weeks after the second dose.”

And more on both mRNA vaccines:

https://academic.oup.com/cid/advance-article/doi/10.1093/cid/ciab229/6167855?searchresult=1

COVID-19 vaccination with an mRNA-based vaccine showed a significant association with a reduced risk of asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection as measured during pre-procedural molecular screening. The results of this study demonstrate the impact of the vaccines on reduction in asymptomatic infections supplementing the randomized trial results on symptomatic patients.

This year, I started recording the daily case counts from the Fairfax dashboard into a spreadsheet. There were 963 cases cases over the past 7 days, the first time we've been sub-1,000 in months. That's a decrease from the already cratering 1,210 cases reported in the previous 7-day cycle. For school followers, that works out to be a build-up of 84 cases per 100,000 over a 7-day period, which is firmly out of the "red" and into the "orange" CDC bucket.

I logged in at 7 am this morning (in MD) expecting a nightmare experience getting a vaccine appointment and got one 10 minutes later at a Walgreens about an hour away. I consider that good news! I'm in group 1C.

MD seems to be doing an honor system? A friend just sent me a website where I could get a vaccine appointment this weekend. I'm in my 40s with no risks and I'm WFH (same with my husband) so we were like, this seems sketchy, we are going to wait until it opens to our group. And VA is big on pre-registering, but in MD that is not a thing? Confusing.

Either way, I'm glad you are getting a appointment this weekend!

Yes MD is on the honor system for the most part. Some places are asking for proof of a job, I had to bring a letter from my employer. Depends on who is working at the pharmacy/mass vax site. Do NOT use a link that someone sends you from the county/state. They are private and your appointment will be cancelled. If someone sends you a link to CVS or the six flags site, that is fine. MDs eligibility is broad and ambiguous. If you qualify but WFH, GET A VACCINE. It doesn't matter if you feel guilty or think you shouldn't. The state says it's your turn so just get it. Vaccines are much easier to get now. To answer your last question, MD is doing pre-registration but only vaccinating the elderly and healthcare workers. Everyone else who qualifies needs to go through a mass vax site (we have 4 now and 1 more coming!) or a pharmacy. VA is using their preregistration to go through 1b which is anyone with a BMI over 25, so it's a huge list. Pharmacies are only vaccinating over 65 and certain workers (teachers and healthcare) in VA.

Also PP, there is so much vaccine you should not have to drive an hour unless you live in bumblef**k. I'm in Bethesda and six flags or Ravens stadium are both 35 minutes away and super easy to get an appointment at. They're one dose so only one trip, but you probably got a moderna/pfizer at Walgreens and will need to go twice. Let’s talk about what you are doing now vaccinated. My mom got her hair done and is coming to dinner. I am not there yet but will be and I plan to get my roots done and am thinking about getting my nails done. Anyone else with fun stuff they are doing now vaccinated or when they are vacinnated.

Getting my first dose on Wednesday and my second on 4/14. Once I'm two weeks past my second dose, I'm getting my nails done for the first time in over a year!
