Considering most depressing news maybe we could use one thread that focuses on some kind of good news. If you have something uplifting please post here.
I think this qualifies, published on Feb 24. Coronavirus: Singapore recovery rate outpaces infections for fourth day in a row Singapore reported the discharge from hospital of two recovered coronavirus patients on Monday, marking the fourth consecutive day that the total number of discharged patients has been higher than the number of infected ones. In all, 53 of the country’s 90 cases have “fully recovered from the infection”, the Health Ministry said in a statement, with one more case linked to a pre-existing cluster at The Life Church and Missions Singapore also being confirmed. https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/southeast-asia/article/3052150/coronavirus-singapore-recovery-rate-outpaces-infections |

Fischer) Twenty Germans who had visited China were released from a two-week quarantine at a German Red Cross (DRK) clinic on Sunday in Berlin. We are "very relieved" that the novel coronavirus had not been detected in any of those affected, said DRK Secretary-General Christian Reuter in a statement. The 14-day isolation had been an "enormous" burden for all concerned, he added. The group included 16 adults and four children. The group on Friday tested negative on their fourth and final test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Since Friday, the DRK has been caring for another 15 Wuhan returnees in Kirchheim unter Teck in Baden-Württemberg. On Saturday, six German passengers of the cruise ship "Diamond Princess" also arrived in Germany after the quarantine on the ship had ended. Last Sunday, more than 100 German Wuhan evacuees were given the all clear to leave quarantined military barracks in Germersheim, Germany. There were initially 122 people on their flight, two of whom tested positive for the virus and were quarantined separately in Frankfurt. Germany has reported 16 cases of coronavirus but no deaths. Several of the cases were linked to one company in the southern state of Bavaria, following the visit of an executive from China. |
Coronavirus: UK 'well prepared' to deal with cases, says government https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-51612039 The UK is "well prepared" to deal with coronavirus cases and the risk to individuals "remains low", the government has said. Downing Street said 99% of those tested in the UK had come back negative. The total number of cases in the UK has risen to 13 after four cruise ship passengers flown back to Britain on Saturday tested positive for the virus. It comes amid growing fears the outbreak could reach pandemic scale as more cases emerge around the world. A total of 6,536 coronavirus tests have been conducted in the UK as of 14:00 GMT on Monday, with 6,527 returning as negative, the Department of Health said. Italy has the largest number of coronavirus cases in Europe, currently 165, and has reported its fifth death from the virus. It has taken tough measures to try and contain the outbreak, including enforcing a lockdown in several small towns in the Lombardy and Veneto regions. Four new UK coronavirus cases among ship evacuees Coronavirus spread raises fears of pandemic Irish warned not to visit Italy amid virus fears Asked whether similar measures could be imposed in the UK, the prime minister's official spokesman said: "We will be led by the advice from public health and medical experts and will take steps which they feel are required to best protect the British public." The risk to individuals "remains low" and 99% of those tested in the UK had come back negative, the spokesman added. He said: "We are well prepared for UK cases, we are using tried and tested procedures to prevent further spread and the NHS is extremely well prepared and used to managing infections." The government will continue to "work closely" with the World Health Organization and international partners, and "remain prepared for all eventualities", he said. So far, the Department of Health and Public Health England have taken a number of measures to deal with the outbreak, which include: The NHS putting specialist teams in every ambulance service and some hospital units Coronavirus diagnostic tests being rolled out to laboratories across the UK, to allow more than 1,000 people a day to be tested The Foreign Office carrying out "enhanced monitoring" of direct flights from nine countries: China, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Macau New legal powers being issued to allow the government to keep people suspected of having the virus in isolation The Foreign Office updated its travel advice for Italy over the weekend, the spokesman added. Coronavirus in the UK: 5 things you need to know about Covid-19 Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs has advised its citizens not to travel to affected areas of Italy. Meanwhile, rugby matches in Italy involving Welsh club Ospreys and Irish side Ulster have been postponed due to restrictions enforced by officials dealing with the outbreak in Italy. Plans are being made to reschedule both fixtures, which were due to take place on Saturday. The UK has supplied equipment including facemasks to China to help combat the spread of the disease, the spokesman confirmed. "We have supplied [the Chinese government] with 1,800 goggles, 430,000 disposable gloves, 194,000 sanitising wipes, 37,500 medical gowns and 2,500 facemasks," he said. |
We went through this with SARS and Ebola. |
Thank you. I started reading the other thread a couple days ago and was stressing the F out. |
Thanks PPs for reminding us that most people do recover from this illness! |
I know this is the good news forum but you can't equate this with Ebola. Ebola is extremely deadly but hard to transmit; this seems to be very easy to spread but not nearly as deadly thank goodness (so that's good news!) |
I think this is an interesting article- basically says we need to stop hoarding and quarantining because its too late. We need to work together to solve the problem other ways.

I’m a frequent poster on the doom and gloom thread.
One thing I find reassuring is news that an anti malaria drug may be useful to prevent complications from this disease. |
Interesting! Can you post the link? |
I find it hopeful that big pharma is getting in on creating the vaccine - the more people working on combating this, the better. |
They're starting a large clinical trial of an antiviral drug, Remdesivir, which has shown some promise in more serious cases. I think they used this on the first US case in Washington. This was the only drug mentioned as effective by the WHO representative in China. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/02/25/us-plans-trial-of-gilead-coronavirus-drug-remdesivir.html
Chloroquine is the antimalarial drug being mentioned, but be careful because its effectiveness might be overstated. https://factcheck.afp.com/anti-malaria-drug-has-proven-effective-treating-coronavirus-has-not-cured-12552-patients The best news about this virus for me is that children seem to handle it well. My 7 yo DD got pneumonia during the H1N1 outbreak, and that was very scary. |
Agreed. No one under 9 has died. Really, its the elderly who are at serious risk. https://twitter.com/AL_13_brk/status/1232318897333788673/photo/1 |
+2 At least the kids will be ok. Honestly, I think most people will get it here but will recover fine. I am more concerned about the financial ramifications. |
The fatality rate at the epicenter of the pandemic is 2%. The people who are most vulnerable are very young children, very old people, and those with underlying health conditions.
I would hope the fatality rate here would be better than in Wuhan, where the health infrastructure is worse. |
