IAC Lacrosse 2019 Season

St Mary's has not been a playoff team in the MIAA since 2015, do not judge the MIAA by it's lower teams. (Spalding, Severn, MSJ, John Carroll)

Calvert Hall, McDonogh, Loyola, Boys Latin and Gilman are the top teams this year with St Mary's hoping to come in 5th or 6th.

The top MIAA teams are outstandin.

Baltimore Homer, St Mary's last won the MIAA in 2015. Since then only 2 other teams in the league have won the title, BL, and Calvert Hall.

Gilman has fallen off in recent years and has failed to make it into the playoffs or even get out of the play in round. St. Pauls has also been down for a few years but their program appears to be heading in the right direction since they brought in alum, Trey Whitty.

DC area teams go 0-2 today against Baltimore teams.

Landon gets rocked by St. Pauls on the road and McDonogh squeaks by Gonzaga in Overtime. Gonzaga scores as time expired to send the game into OT.

Spalding is a dumpster fire. Daddy ball is king at the school

Landon’s loss to St. Paul’s has to be there worst in many years! Are they that bad or is St. Paul’s that good?

St. Paul's is a decent MIAA lacrosse school. The MIAA is probably stronger than the IAC. I'd assume Landon is a pretty young team this year after the two beast teams they had last season and season before last.

SJC crushed MSJ after losing a very sloppy game to Landon. Lot of parity throughout area where the hop half of WCAC and IAC teams can win any given game.

MSJ wil finish dead last in the MIAA

MSJ is terrible. They will come in last in the MIAA.

St. Pauls will finish in the top 5 of the MIAA this year.

I believe McDonogh and Calvert Hall are the top 2 in Baltimore this year, followed by Boys Latin and then most likely St. Pauls. Gilman is supposed to have one of their stronger teams in recent years but their boosters have been saying the same thing for the past 3 seasons.

All in all, I think its a down year for DC area lacrosse.

It certainly appears that this is the case, I am very curious to see how Bullis fares in their season opener. I know they lost one of their top attackmen to injury, but their sophomore class is supposed to be really strong, we shall see.

As a DC lax homer it's still weird treating Bullis as a "power" despite their recent success.

You shouldn't be surprised. Bullis has openly and unashamedly recruited in football and basketball for years against league rules. Others did it too but Bullis doesn't try to hide it. And in recent years they recruited openly through the efforts of Performance SS. They gave a scholarship for a well to do family for a kid to come from a private school in VA to play lacrosse and then that kid runs back to VA never to be heard from again by the Bullis community. The school has tons of money and incredible facilitities and provides tons of aid so of course it attracts talent.

Perhaps the situation occuring this summer where Bellistri's job was saved by a correct alumni and school support group and the firing of Performance SS will knock them back a bit but not for the next couple of years.

It will be interesting to see what comes of Bullis lacrosse after this year, despite the one year superstar who bolted after being enrolled in the school for 10 months, Bullis still has a very strong senior class.

I do think Bullis will take a major drop after this season. Their sports-obsessed headmaster is being forced out after the 2020 school year (Bullis boosters will deny this but the administration doesn't want to buy him out for his last year). Bellistri is still a very good coach so while I expect for them to still compete favorably in the IAC and against WCAC foes, I see their National aspiration taking a step back.

I think the days of Bullis handing out free rides to the superstar athletes is gradually fading. Too many full pay families or those on not enough student have voiced their concerns enough to the current administration and BOT.

St. Paul's played extremely well and they dominated that game all day long.

On the flip side. There was plenty of talent on Landon's side line that stood for over an hour straight in the cold while Landon continued playing the same tired, timid and slow offense as if something was somehow going to miraculously change from one quarter to the next. It's hard to understand what is going through a coaching staff's mind at times, but when your team is down 11-3 in the 3rd and going from bad to worse you might want to give some other guys a shot.

Some interesting scores from around the region today.

Boys Latin 12
Gonzaga 9

Gilman 9
G. Prep 8

Bullis 7
Loyola Blakefield 3

St. Stephens 7
Mt. Saint Josephs 5

Landon 11
St. Andrews (MD) 9

St. Albans 9
Bishop O'Connell 7

Despite Gonzaga's 0-2 start to the season, I still think they are the team to beat in the DC Region. Both of their losses have come against big-time Baltimore powers. Prep vs Gonzaga on Friday should be a very competitive game but I think the Eagles should prevail.
