Thoughts on U Richmond

What posters don't get is that some people make a lot more money than their neighbor or have saved a lot more their kids' education than their neighbor has saved. Or maybe they inherited some money or settled a huge pi case. So, these private schools aren't the luxury for them that they are for others.

Yeah - but there are so many better private options at $60-65 per year. Or state schools at $30k. This school is $90k per year. I guess if you have money to burn but might as well save it and go to aspen or Europe or buy the second home in Hilton head.

Would you send your kid to another mid tier school for $90k, even if you had money to burn?

It’s a private in their own state but they can’t afford to go. School gets lots of NE kids to attend so they are jealous?

Jealous of Richmond? Come on. Let’s be honest here. No one is jealous of Richmond.

Agree. I could see getting jealous over an Ivy or Ivy like school if prestige is your thing. No one chasing prestige gets jealous of Richmond. Most people in the prestige crowd don’t even know the school.

T20 gets shit on all the time, e.g. the Chicago thread two posts down, but for obvious reasons.

There are many outside t20 and expensive but no one seems to care. I think being in Virginia is its sin. Ordinary people, at least the ones on dcum, are small persons, kinda trumpy.

It’s a weird school. Not really a true SLAC. Wealthy but not elite or prestigious. Expensive. Is there another school like it? Bucknell comes to mind. Any others? Really a niche school.

They do if their kid is at JMU or Mason or VCU. Maybe even VA Tech for humanities?

Last year my daughter was looking at a bunch of well known t30 SLACs and Richmond. Everyone would always ask: why Richmond? I felt like I needed to defend it. Not so either the others. She ended up elsewhere. Happy with how things turned out.

Please. Be serious.

Most people think of Richmond as a regional commuter school. It’s not on the same class with schools like bates, Colby, Macalester, Grinnell, Kenyon, Denison, Oberlin, Haverford, etc. The US News rankings are meaningless. People in the know understand these schools and want they have to offer.

Washu gets hate all the time. Richmond is right under their big hairy nose, they can’t ignore it. Yeah these are small people.

DP. They get jealous? This doesn’t even compute for me. We can afford $90k for our in-state student and I think my kid would be a fool to choose Richmond over JMU, VCU or Va Tech. Thankfully, she agrees. No jealousy here.

WashU and Richmond aren’t even in the same galaxy. People hating on WashU are doing so for other reasons. You can at least make a plausible if not compelling case that for pre-med WashU is worth $90k a year, even though we wouldn’t do it (and we can afford it). When it comes to Richmond, there is no argument. You are burning money.

I agree. Richmond isn’t a traditional SLAC. What exactly do they have to offer? I’d rather send my kid to Elon.

We had the same experience! It’s crazy how few people know Richmond. Zero name recognition for sure.
