What happens if they get the required signatures?

They have the burden of persuading a county judge they should not be removed. Basically, the board member would say "I showed up at Board meetings, so I wasn't neglecting my duties, and all the decisions I made were within my authority to make, so I didn't do anything wrong." That would be enough for some judges. Others might dig deeper and focus on whether the decisions made were consistent with the overarching responsibility of Board members to act in the best interests of students. So a bit of a roll of the dice. But as a practical matter probably a nail in the coffin of a member's aspirations to be elected to local public office again.

This will be even harder to prove during the pandemic. That is the primary obstacle that is in front of them because there's not exactly a precedence for this.

+1, They were all of so following the recommendations of VDH by using the dashboard which cost some delays in the school startups.

How did they vote or advocate on the school reopening, though? I know they basically never put reopening issues to a vote because they don’t want the record, and they largely do the reopening discussions at “work sessions,” not formal meetings. Laura Jane, for example, voted and advocated against reopening until the bitter end, even though (as pointed out upthread) her constituents in West Springfield and Burke largely chose hybrid/in person for their kids. Interestingly, Omeish came around to the reopening bloc eventually and started to side with the pro-openers.

One’s Jewish, One’s Muslim and One’s to cover so they can claim they’re not targeting the other two for not being good WASPs.

Grow up.

Y’all first. Buncha whiny toddlers soiling their diapers because they didn’t get their way. Buck up and vote against them next time- or heck run yourselves! But that would require more than passive action and y’all know YOU couldn’t take the heat once you fail to live up to your neighbors’ lofty expectations.

Organizing and conducting a recall action, as expressly authorized by state law, takes time and effort. It’s anything but a passive exercise. You are the one who sits in your basement whining about people trying to make a positive change - in response to an incompetent School Board that has driven thousands of families out of FCPS entirely.

Your candidate(s) lost their elections. You don’t like the current office holders? Great, vote against them next time.

“I don’t like them so I want them recalled” is some medical-grade entitlement BS, legal or not.

Recalls are specifically authorized under state law. Take it up with the state legislature if you think they erred. Otherwise STFU.

Yes they all got elected because everyone is just so bigoted.

You guys are just pathetic.

I dunno, teachers unions that demanded that teachers be vaccinated before the elderly, and then doubled down and suggested that all students should also be vaccinated before teachers returned to classrooms were pretty "entitled," as were the School Board members who indulged them far too long. School Board members who pushed their own pet projects that also had nothing to do with getting kids back in classrooms don't deserve much sympathy.

I’m in Cohen’s district, and our schools only had maybe 1/3 of students want to return

So maybe overall, it was more like half? Her district isn’t just Burke/West Springfield

That teachers “union” represented only a tiny percentage of teachers and the students were returned to school once teachers were vaccinated. So what’s the problem?

Anonymous wrote:Our public schools just endured a pandemic.

Given the drastic effect on our children’s education, this school board ought to have been laser-focused on making the best academic choices in a tough situation.

But instead of focusing on academics, these 3 members used up the Board’s time (and made their priority):

- re-naming schools and dismantling TJ’s admissions policy.

TJ’s current student body is 80% minority / people of color. Admission is based purely on academics and it is color-blind.

These 3 board members have a problem with that.

They also defended ignoring the pandemic and prioritizing “renaming” by making the ridiculous allegation:

- BIPOC students are prevented from learning because they don’t feel safe at a school with the wrong (in their view) name.

Let’s not forget there is a tangible cost too: renaming just one school can cost up to $500,000 (half a million dollars) of taxpayer money.

These Board members do not have your children’s best interest or education in mind. All 3 must be recalled before they do even more damage.

What an absurd comment. This has nothing to do with anyone’s religion.
