DP, but it is odd that FCPS regularly claims it doesn't have enough money when it comes to academics and facilities, but keeps coming up with issues where it feels compelled to spend tax dollars on lawyers, appeals, and amicus briefs.

This is about the bigger issue - it is time for Brabrand and the Board to move on, recognize they lost the mask issue and should leave medical decisions to others, and get back to teaching our kids the basics. Instead of spending money on frivolous lawsuits, they should devote the money to funding to teacher raises, buying supplies, undertaking renovation, and teaching our kids. This decision should never have been in the hands of Brabrand and the Board - and it has now been taken away from them by a bipartisian passage of a new law.

The irony is that the School Board defends spending all this money on litigation because they say they are standing up for the idea of local control, but it’s the complete mismanagement of FCPS by the likes of this School Board that is driving the families of over 10,000 kids out of the system entirely. If they had even a smidgen of self-awareness they’d realize how bad they’ve made “local control” sound.

And the hypocrisy never ends. Elaine Tholen may be the biggest hypocrite on the Board but she’s got plenty of company.

Most large orgs have a budget line item for litigation that is separate from operating expenses. So not the same bucket of money. I'd bet that is the same issue here.

I cant get over this "local control" issue. How about FCPS focus on educating kids?

If you can't get over it, then you don't understand it. Why should FCPS be bound by what schools in SW VA are doing?
If educating kids is really your concern, then what's your problem? FCPS is the best district in the state and we've been back in school all year.

But in a pandemic, the goals are society ones not ones your individual family wants. Homeschool or go private if you don't like it. PERIOD.

And as noted in another post, litigation budget is generally separate from normal day-to-day operations, salaries, etc. Federal government being the biggest example of that.

What an odd post. It doesn't matter if litigation (and settlement) expenses are a different line item in a budget (say, general and administrative expenses rather than salaries). It's one operating budget, so more spent on litigation and settlement costs means less money for something else.

You are looking at masks as one issue - but for the rest of us "every little issue" is in fact a well established pattern of failure by brabrand and the board stretching back over two years. Others here have listed their many failures but given how aggressive you are, I will not waste my time or yours trying to convince you. Ill just highlight that many of us will not forget this when November 2023 rolls around.

Those of us who've watched this School Board make a hash of just about everything they've touched have every right to let them know we'll seek their removal next year. They are the ones most in need of "moving on," hopefully to other pursuits that have nothing to do with education.
