Is fresh fruit seriously not that great for us, or do people just eat too much of them?

People in cultures that eat fruit don’t gain the 60lbs to begin with...

Are you aware of the growing burden if diabetes in the developing world? For example, as of 2017, the percentage of overweight women in Bangladesh, even rural areas, exceeded the percentage of underweight women. -Public health professional

Absolutely. And it’s because American style fast foods are becoming increasingly prevalent in the developing world. So, yes, if you stop eating traditional foods and adopt an American diet, you’ll still get fat - just like Americans do.

PP here and while you are correct that fast foods are becoming increasingly available in developing countries, that is not really what I am talking about as that mainly pertains to urban populations. In rural Bangladesh it is the over consumption of rice and very limited consumption of vegetables that drives a lot of obesity. Oil and salt are also increasingly used but as part of traditional foods, not American style foods. What has mostly changed is decreased physical activity, especially for women. Also, people who are stunted because of poor nutrition as very young children are more prone to obesity, which is a major contributing factor.

When 3rd world countries Receive seeds from the US in the form of aid, the quality of the produce changes. The rice which is making rural Bangladesh gain substantial weight is being produced by Monsanto’s and the like. Their digestive system is not used to the genetically modified seeds and thus cannot process them. This is exactly the reason why so many people who come tomorrow live/work in the US put on large amounts of weight in a short period of time (including professional dancers who always watch what they put in their mouth).

No totally wrong.

I think we can all agree that residents of the 3rd world are not getting fatter because they eat bananas.

I know that bananas spike my blood sugar. Same with things like watermelon or grapes. So, I have to be very careful with certain foods. Berries, apples, grapefruit, certain other fruit doesn't cause such a spike.

Me too

Bananas and apples will send me sky high so I tend to eat one or the other before a workout.

I've been doing weight watchers pretty successfully (averaging 1-2 lbs lost per week), and weight watchers lets you eat unlimited fruit - it's '0 points'. Obviously there is room to abuse that, but honestly I've been snacking on a TON of fresh fruit this summer with no detriment to my weight loss.

I understand that it could possibly add up to a lot of sugar and calories but honestly, I probably eat it 2-3 times per day and I'm still losing weight. It's way better than snacks or desserts, IMO, so I'm going to keep eating it until it doesn't work for me anymore.

The main reason I weighed in on this thread though was to mention that Weight Watchers lets you eat unlimited fruit and lots of people have success on that program, so I don't think it's objectively wrong.

+1 This. When I had gestational diabetes, I didn't eat them as often, or ate them with peanut butter.

my 17 years old son consumes 2 avocado, 6 bananas, 2 apples, 20 strawberries, 2 slices of pineapple, and 1 lb of blueberries, in the form of smoothies, everyday

It's all such BS.

My SIL did Whole 30 and lost .5 lbs. Then she joined WW, where most fruits are zero points and "Free" in normal portions, and lost 10 lbs in a month.

No one ever got fat from eating a banana. They are botanically a berry, have a lot of potassium.

I know my old roommate, who was diabetic, couldn't have bananas, watermelon, pineapple, grapes, or oranges due to the amount of sugar in them. She had to stick with berries except for cherries.

When I had a personal trainer a few years ago, he told me that fruit was nature's candy and should be treated as such and limited just like candy. Of course, he also told me that my egg allergy was fake and eating eggs could help me "overcome my fear" because the symptoms I showed after eating an egg were my body's manifestation of my mind's weakness. So, I mean, take that how you will. He was a great trainer, but kind of a crackpot. I do still follow what he said about fruit, though.

Fruit is generally great. Exception: bananas and grapes are not.
To say that bananas and grapes are not great is not saying that fruit is not great.

Same for bananas though not the same issue with apples for me. I avoid them because they don't make me feel full at all and I get super hungry shortly after having them. If they don't do this to you then go for it. I just prefer fruits and veggies that make me feel like I really ate something and bananas don't do it for me.

You people are nuts. Seriously nuts. No human on the planet of anywhere gets fat eating fruit. Bananas are an excellent source of potassium. I swear the diet industry literally preys on insecure fat people. You fell for Atkins. You fell for all the low carb nonsense. You fell for gluten free, .... What next?
