The organization of this backlash is from a few very conservative congregations in the area and one outside hate group. Andrea Lafferty of the Traditional Values Coalition was present and visibly the main organizer when I attended two school board meetings where this topic was discussed and public commentary was given. I have been to many school board meetings over the years for various reasons and the first of these meeting last year was the most tension filled and hated filled I have ever attended. It was downright scary.

That is scary. Thanks for the insight. Hope nothing comes of this fear-mongering.

Yes, thank you. I am fairly conservative and sympathetic to concerns about this issue, but I want no part of a movement that tries to use socially acceptable language and reasoning as a cloak for hate, rage, and prejudice, especially when it comes to children.

So: serious question before I sign. What is the plan to make this money up after FCPS gives the federal government the middle finger?

Ummm... no it's not. Parts of the admin are using a new definition of sex to make this point, but pointedly deny this definition can be used for Title IX. The courts will ultimately decide the definition of sex, and it will have to be consistent for Title I and IX, probably no one will be happy. If gender is fluid and not biological, then woman's sports are in for a major change.

Ummmm... Yes it is. Or are you the idiot who starts petitions (with bad grammar) and doesn't both to learn the facts:

Not the OP. But I have studied the facts, which are not addressed in your link. The unintended consequences of this ill thought out policy will certainly be a challenge. DOE and one lower level court in Texas have advocated that the term "discrimination based on sex" as described in Title I must not be strictly interpreted based on biological sex. That an individuals sex must be respected based on whichever sex they choose to be and that it is unreasonable to ask for any legal, medical, or other documentation. An individuals sex is simply what the individual claims it to be. If this precedent survives, the same definition must apply to Title IX as well. It will be a mess.

Okay. This is gibberish. And what some future Court might do down the road is irrelevant to what the law is now. So again-- what is the plan to replace the federal funds that would be pulled next year if FCPS did what you ask? Because under the law, as it stands, federal funding would be pulled. (Also, we are in the 4th Circuit. What a federal Court does in Texas does not apply to us unless/until the Supreme Court signs off. And it would take several years of no federal funding to reach the Supremes). I imagine Title I schools care a lot about the reading specialists they would lose and have little patience for made up problems from hate based fear mongerers.

Thank you. You give people with conservative values a good name.

Hive mind. Some people are just copying and pasting others comments. Others are not even in Fairfax - Gaithersburg, really?

I don't want confused boys in my daughter's locker room or bathroom at school. Start a Facebook page for the petition, that will help get more signatures. You'll also need to meet with school board members about the petition.

I don't want the children of bigots in my child's school. How can I start a petition to get your kid banned?

Also, I doubt OP is going to start a Facebook group. Bigots usually like to remain anonymous, which is why she came here.

To be fair, her kids probably benefit from spending time with kids being raised in a tolerant environment. I'd focus more on making sure the bigoted parents don't aren't given access to the school where they can spread their hateful ideas to the kids.

Wow, 158 of you out of the thousands of parents in FCPS. That'll show them.

158? When I signed it there were about 70 something. And the petition isn't being emailed to all FCPS parents, I only learned about it from checking here yesterday. I've also spent very little time on DCUM, or being online period, in the past few days. I'll bet that a lot of parents would sign it if they knew about it. But we're all just "haters" right?

Uh, yeah, you are. Not sure what point you were trying to make. Have you read the comments? Things that have nothing to do with this - "I don't want my straight child to learn about LGBT people in health class."

You're right. Hopefully her children grow up better than her.

+1. They don't want their kids to that transgender people exist. I don't want my kids to learn that some adults are hateful bigots. I guess we are both going let our kids learn about the real world.

Google some of these nuts signing this petition. Long history of outspoken homophobia, refusal to let their kids face reality, and worse, some appear to be employed by the school system.

Can FCPS employees do that? Make hateful comments about FCPS students under their own names on a public forum?

I don't know. I suppose if their comments aren't inflammatory, maybe?
