Chevy Chase Club to Parents: Your kids are brats

Agree. This is nothing new.

(I know this because a CC friend inferred that my son wasn't bright because he is well behaved and polite.)

This is a common theme on DCUM too -- kids who misbehave in the W schools (and BCC) do so because they are bored in class, ie, the kids are gifted.

Yes! Not just public, private too! Our neighbor's DD was "counseled out" of private but she tells everyone "she was bored!" Ha! They also belong to CC. Lol. Her dd is the biggest Veruca Salt/spoiled brat in the DC Metro region. But as we know, apples never fall from the tree.

I grew up going there and was recently home visiting my parents for Christmas (I live in Los Angeles now)

I went to the bathroom and while in there a group of young girls were milling around, playing with the hairbrushes and kind of joking with each other. I noticed that one of the girls seemed kind of bossy, but thought nothing of it when I walked up to wash my hands.

The bossy one came up to me and asked how old I was.

Thinking they were sweet little girls, I gave them and a big smile and told them my age, 26.

The girl immediately glared at me and informed me that I dont look 26, I look like a teenager. (This was not intended as a compliment, I can assure you)

This seemed to break some kind of onslaught, and as I dried my hands, one of them shouted at me that she hated my dress.

It was really SO bizarre, and I kind of wanted to say something back, or tell them that they were being completely out of line. But then I realized that I was genuinely thinking of insulting a bunch of ten year olds, so I didn't do it.

BUT I dont think I've ever been so appalled by the behavior of kids. It was really strange.

As I walked away from the bathroom I could hear them saying stuff to a woman who had walked in.

It was pretty gross, like Mean Girls Chevy Edition.

If that's what the kids are like now, I'm glad Chevy is doing something.

PP, this is the most bizarre story I have ever heard. I have a 10 YO DS and I simply cannot imagine his female friends behaving in this manner.

Was not shocked at all.

Well, the other common theme on DCUM is disbelief that kids can be bored in class or gifted. It absolutely does not excuse bad behavior, but many of us have well-behaved kids who are nonetheless bored and/or gifted. Signed, mom of kid who never gets in trouble and is miserably bored in school.

Honestly, this was one factor in making me feel uncomfortable at big 3 schools. And come to think of it, the people who most rankled me mentioned "chevy" a bunch of times.

Some of the behavior is atrocious!

+10000

My DC's friends have parents that tolerate so much BS, yet when I disciplined my DC, it was "front page news". These kind of parents are doing their children NO favors. I correct one of them automatically when she is disrespectful to me, in my house. She can't take it, she starts pacing if I say "(name), we don't do that here". She's never been corrected in her life. How the hell is that supposed to be helping her???!!!

Hint: it is NOT.

PP if your child is truly that gifted and bored, and is equally advanced in all of the other skills that a school setting provides, then s/he does not belong in public school. Have you considered a personal tutor to handle the education?

I have been in D.C. long enough to know that people in D.C. are pretty stupid. Low EQ does NOT equal high IQ - but D.C. people are too stupid to realize.

Everyone is bored at school. Your child isn't unique. I have never read that children aren't bored or gifted. Bad behavior is not a sign of intelligence. If it was then kids in certain failing schools in DC would be scoring better on standardized tests. Rich people see their children's bad behavior as intelligence but poor kids' bad behavior is proof of criminality.

I posted the previous comment. My DC is in MCPS' gifted program. DC was bored in class, especially math. And for the most part, DC is well behaved in school, too. So, I do know that gifted kids can be bored in class. However, my previous comment stands - in the wealthier schools, parents like to think their kids act out in class either because they are bored because they are gifted or they must have some behavioral issues which drugs can cure. In the non-wealthy "gang infested" schools, however, the kids act out because their parents don't know how to parent. That is the common theme on DCUM.

What? The kids wouldn't include your kid because your DH doesn't make enough $? How old are these kids? I can see adults or older kids doing this, but can't be young kids, right?

Nope, not super gifted in all areas, but ahead enough that what she does in school is boring to her. She behaves, is quiet, and has never gotten in trouble. But she hates school and I can see why -- she's completely ignored because she's not a problem and she's 3-4 grade levels ahead. Yes, we are considering changing schools. Not easy. Personal tutor wouldn't make sense, she needs and enjoys the socialization.
