next on the agenda: how to expel a lot of progressives from the MoCo council

I don't have a lot of free time, but if there's a group out there that will work to return the county back to common sense governance - I will offer everything that I've got.

The county predicts some impact with the new administration. This includes some people leaving the county when their jobs are moved elsewhere.

So, what do they propose? Raising taxes! Never think to cut spending:

Practically speaking, I suspect some level of tax increase will be better than bearing everything through cuts, but Elrich seems far too excited by the prospect.

There is so much nonsense in the budget that I am sure they could save a ton through cuts if they were forced to do so. There is around $80 million in non-competitive grant awards from the Council direct to local organizations alone. It is basically a political slush fund to give money to organizations like CASA without accountability. They had to create a whole grant office just to administer these things they are spending so much on them. Parks seems to have way too much money if they have enough to rip up roads. Planning is an obvious case of bloat, with tail wagging the dog driven policy making where they seem to exist only to try to obtain professional awards for themselves instead of promoting economic development. On and on and on and on.

After the financial crisis, Ike Leggett was able to keep the budget balanced through cuts during what was a significantly more difficult economic time than the present and the Council has done nothing but raise and raise and raise taxes to no end.

Yet, Republicans have long advocated for partnering with private organizations- in their case, churches- to provide social services to constituents.

WTF are you talking about? Churches are a major recipient of these county grants.

Yet the pp didn't call that out like they did CASA.

That said, we can definitely work to find some council members more like Elrich than the current group. He’s blue and he’s rational.

Only a progressive would try to tell everyone that a candidate who was contemplating taxing unrealized gains (Harris) was a GOP lite.

Lol, GTFO. Harris was a far left loon. Anyone on the council like her and to the left needs to be eviscerated out of the council.

Why don’t you just move to one of the hillbilly states? You can find one at your reading level and everyone will be happy.

No one but one of Trump’s brainwashed cockroaches would consider Harris anything but a slightly left of center (in the US) or slightly right of center ?internationally) candidate.

Get rid of the stupid Green Bank funding. We give $20 million a year to it for no reason.

People don't vote in local elections in this county. The turnout numbers are dismal. Most residents are completely unaware of the council and the executive. Apathy rules. The cabal of think tank wonks+developers+social science phd brigade know this and actively work to ensure that it stays this way. This way they can cram through experimental pet projects and dish out tax payers money to their favorite non profit organizations like Halloween candy to ensure those non-profits' CEO's earn their $180K salaries. Oh, and bike lanes that no one uses.

Thank you for those who posted the previous links. Very useful information there.

Jawando's chief of staff just quit and now heads up Ranked Choice Voting Maryland. Ranked choice voting will make candidates actually listen and address various voter viewpoints and tends to be beneficial to more moderate candidates.

Even easier, we can just have open primaries. 1/3 of voters in the county are unaffiliated.

I don't say this often about people, but they are truly stupid.

True. Elrich budgets are built on smoke and mirrors. He could keep hiding it with all the federal Covid funds that propped up government for three years. Much of that has now run out and this next budget will be a reckoning. One that the Council probably doesn't have the courage to right-size.

I think there is a lot of pent up sentiment in the county angry at the progressives on the MoCo council who have now rammed through upzoning that's going to bulldoze a lot of middle class neighborhoods. MCPS are failing badly due to way too much misguided focus on equity that's ruining all standards for quality and discipline enforcement. Car insurance is exploding in the area because there are a lot of undocumented individuals driving around with no insurance. Everyone is sick and tired of the county's force acceptance of crime due to the progressive council. The street racing and loud cars are out of control. Gang crime is out of control. The county is also not economically growing compared to our peers since there is so much hostile red tape.

How do we gut the council progressives out in the next elections? Who is in the wings we should rally around to bring back common sense law enforcement, tough standards for education, and who will be against all this upzoning garbage?

Hopefully Orangehead's people live across the Potomac, let VA have 'em.

How about you move to your Red wave state and leave the blues alone? How would a red state maga person like it if I moved and tried to change their way?

The problem for MoCo is that people are actually doing this. Affluent people in MoCo are moving to Virginia and being replaced by poor people from PG County and Latin America moving in, leaving population growth stagnant. Not a great policy for a robust tax base.

Citation please

These “citation please” people are the problem. Just do a modicum of research. You don’t even need a study. Just go and look at the census summary report and compare 2010 and 2020.

Barely any population growth. Huge increase in poverty rates. Then go drive around upcounty in Gaithersburg and Germantown. It’s not fricking rocket science.

Census data showed that MoCo grew by 90,000 people, FFX grew by 66,000 people and Arlington grew by 60,000 people and PG grew by 100,000 people. So much for people moving to Virginia.
I drive all the times to Gaithersburg and Germantown, what am I supposed to look for "Huge increase in poverty rates"?
