No sane candidates bother running anymore so it’s pointless. |
The problem for MoCo is that people are actually doing this. Affluent people in MoCo are moving to Virginia and being replaced by poor people from PG County and Latin America moving in, leaving population growth stagnant. Not a great policy for a robust tax base. |

I think car insurance is going up because auto theft has skyrocketed over the past two years.
Not because of uninsured drivers.https://companymileage.com/rising-insurance-costs/ |
Not that poster, but here is the most recent study. https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/OLO/Resources/Files/2024_reports/OLOReport2024-15.pdf |
The % of MOCO population that is low income has grown from 25% to 30% while the share that is middle income has stayed the same. MOCO is importing a bunch of low income taxpayers and it is changing the composition of the tax base unfavorably. https://montgomeryplanning.org/blog-design/2024/03/repositioning-montgomery-county-for-prosperity-part-2-montgomery-countys-income-shifts-in-regional-and-national-contexts/ |
which is why Elrich will raise taxes this next budget. We aren't getting enough tax revenues now to support all his little pet projects |
Silver Spring had the largest growth of any city in 2023. Dale City #10. https://thehill.com/homenews/nexstar_media_wire/4978667-list-these-are-the-fastest-growing-cities-in-the-us-2024-report-finds/ Given the home prices in SS, I doubt that the growth is purely due to illegal immigrants. Also, Glen Burnie was #3. |

There was also a demographics report a few years ago. I can't find it now but it showed:
* Population growth will be entirely driven by 'international migration'. This is basically just code speak for illegal immigration. * There will be a significant decline of 40-49 year olds in the county who are in their prime earning years. This is coupled with a dramatic increase of retirees . Basically, the county is going to be a lot more impoverished as it gets a lot more illegal immigration and earners who make the most are leaving or are becoming less and less of a fraction of the population of the county. The council can't grow the economy and they basically never cut spending, so you can do the math for what it means - loooots of tax increases are coming..Progressives have never seen a tax they don't like. It's always a problem with taxation and never a spending problem. They all need to be kicked out. |

As much as I would like to see this happen, it simply won't.
People don't vote in local elections in this county. The turnout numbers are dismal. Most residents are completely unaware of the council and the executive. Apathy rules. The cabal of think tank wonks+developers+social science phd brigade know this and actively work to ensure that it stays this way. This way they can cram through experimental pet projects and dish out tax payers money to their favorite non profit organizations like Halloween candy to ensure those non-profits' CEO's earn their $180K salaries. Oh, and bike lanes that no one uses. Thank you for those who posted the previous links. Very useful information there. If there is anyone out there who knows of an organization or group that would like to meet and brainstorm a way to counter the current iron grip of virtue warriors and get information to every resident that spells out exactly how their tax dollars are wasted, please link away. I don't have a lot of free time, but if there's a group out there that will work to return the county back to common sense governance - I will offer everything that I've got. |
These “citation please” people are the problem. Just do a modicum of research. You don’t even need a study. Just go and look at the census summary report and compare 2010 and 2020. Barely any population growth. Huge increase in poverty rates. Then go drive around upcounty in Gaithersburg and Germantown. It’s not fricking rocket science. |
Jawando's chief of staff just quit and now heads up Ranked Choice Voting Maryland. Ranked choice voting will make candidates actually listen and address various voter viewpoints and tends to be beneficial to more moderate candidates. |
I’m the PP. yes I could have done my own research but how then would I have known the data I find (which may or may not match your conclusions) are the same stats that you were referring to. If you are going to talk about changing demographics, show the data you’re using to back this up. Don’t just make a bold statement without showing how you got there- that’s half the problem with these types of discussions. Don’t put it on others to fact check you either. Thank you to the posters who included citations and helped educate all of us! |
Even easier, we can just have open primaries. 1/3 of voters in the county are unaffiliated. |
